I would prefer it to be because I have dealt with them in the past :)

And the shipping is great from them, 1 day to get to me :)

then the G5 Canon is your only option.

Nice camera, but its the only one that Newegg has with what you are looking for.

Can't help too much with the specific choice; I was looking for a camera not too long ago but I was a step or two below you in budget - I spent about $400 on the camera (4.0MP Canon A80 - and I love it! :) ). These sites might help though, if you don't mind doing some reading:

DPR

Imaging Resource

Steve's

DCRP

These aren't in any particular order, other than how they appear in my favorites list; my favorite site is probably DCRP. They're all pretty good though.

If you want optical zoom, I think the Kodak 6490 model would be what you want. 10x zoom. It's only 4MP though.

From all the test photos I compared I felt Cannon's color was second to none. This was last summer and I ended up purchasing an A70. To a point its subjective but go to sites which allow you to see for yourself before deciding.

I was gonna say s500 but then I read that the camera can't be silver. So I would have to say the s50 ot the G5. I've used both camera and loved both of them. I don't like the size of G5 though.

You're basing a $500+ camera purchase on color? I like the Canon G5 that GoodDad mentioned, but that's not to say the others which have been mentioned aren't good.

Hey hey guys, thanks a lot for the responses!

Yeah it is trivial to see a 500 dollar decision based primarily on color!! Haha

Macro is very important!!! Well in a sense to me because I want to take pictures of my reef aquarium--big time closeups!!

Right now it seems as if the Nikon 5400 is taking the cake... I am still heavily considering the G5 though....

Any more words of advice would be great!

Thanks again,

There's an underwater housing available for the Olympus that I linked to in my first post in this thread. IMO, Olympus gets a bum rap. Canon is everyone's favorite and there is some reason for that, but an Olympus is not going to be significantly different in terms of quality.

Stay away from the Kodak Digicams though. They tend to not even compare with companies like Canon, Nikon, or Olympus.

Thanks for all the help guys!

When it came down to it--it was a battle between the G5 and the Nikon 5400...

The 5400 had the best macro (which is very important) and also is 100 dollars cheaper.

I would've wanted to go for the G5... but the 100 dollars price diff. didn't warrant it's purchase over the 5400!

Thanks again!!

I know that Canon just released a black version of their Digital Rebel. Check out dpreview.com for more info.
