Good Decision on small Processor upgrade

Well, it is not a small upgrade to me but I wanted to run it past you guys.

My friend got a FX-55 Clawhammer a couple weeks ago and wants to sell it to me for $130.

Right now I am running an ASUS A8N Sli-Deluxe with a 3000+ Winchester.

Should I wait for a good deal on the FX-55 San Diego/FX-57?

Is an X2 better for gaming?

I don't overclock, don't know how.

Thanks!

You probably won't see a deal like that again for quite a while.

And the X2 isn't necessarily better for gaming for most games. That FX-55 would be better for most games simply because it's faster and most games don't take advantage of dual cores.

you can learn to oc, if your winchester doesn't oc well, then there will be a performance diff in gaming, else it would be close to 0. however a x2 is a much better buy now.

I guess I am a little confused. Let me be more specific.

I am mainly a gamer, when I have time I definitely like to sit down and play so for the long run, will a single core FX benefit me or moving to an X2. I know current games don't take advantage of X2. Are the newer games going to take better advantage of an X2 rather than FX?

Is quad-core coming to the 939 boards?

For the long run, you will want an X2. Overclock it and enjoy. And no, quad core CPUs will not be coming to s939.

We have no idea what plans game designers have been making for their future games. And, if we were that good at predicting the future, none of us would be on AT, answering questions from newbies. We'd all spend all of our time online buying the next stock that was gonna quintuple in value overnight.

I can tell you that quad-core will never come to Skt 939. We don't even know for sure that quad-core will be coming to AM2, though the biggest AMD fanboys on every site, including this one, are convinced that they will. AMD has never said that AM2 will have quad-core.

I can also tell you that your video card is about 25x as important as your processor, as far as being able to play any game. You'd be three times as well off by having an FX-55 and an 8800GTX, than having a $1,000 Core 2 Duo, and a $50-100 video card.

Sorry, forgot to say I was running a 7900GT. It is a great card. Runs everything just fine. I am not a big fan of AA or AF and I run all games on 1280*960.

Just deciding between an FX or X2.

Thanks
