Good deals on CD-RW 4X 700MB 80min.?

Memorex CD-RW media didn't work for me at all. I bought two 5-packs of 10x media and NONE of the first four disks would burn successfully -- I took the second pack back. The Ritek disc that came with my drive worked flawlessly as did a 5-pack of 10x TDK cd-rw media.

Beware.

Also, check the newsgroups for reviews on memorex cd-rw media. It seems I am not alone in this.

That's because 10x CD-RW media is "high-speed" media. You can't use 4x media on a high speed CD-RW drive - read your drive's user manual.

If the information isn't in the user manual, do a search on "Orange Book", which I believe the the standard for the high-speed 10x media....

I also seem to remember, that you cannot use the high-speed media on a "slow" speed CD-rewriter - again, this is from memory so you should read-up on the -RW media formats....

I am sure opinions will vary and I don't want to thread crap, but I hate this media.
I bought a 5 pack of the 10X and it will not write in my Lite-On faster then 4X without
many errors. Since I use this mostly for temporary viewing of VCD's the errors do cause
problems. I have some TDK 10X media that is tons better and writes without issue at 10X.

Maybe the 4X is better, I don't know.

so tdk aren't bad? I have a 4x RW drive... I could use some of these for cheap. anyone give any more personal experiences with these media?

FYI: This memorex media in the 650MB format is 9.99 for 25PK. So for 50MB less you'll save about 5 bucks. Works for me.

Free would be a good deal now. Otherwise, if you wanna pay money, check the hot deals forum 3 years ago. You can borrow my time machine if you don't have one.

I guess this is where you need to have a chitchat with my 32X12X40X CDRW. It doesn't seem to have a problem with Memorex (Ritek) 4X CDRWs. Perhaps the local steward hasn't convinced it to join the union yet. I'm not a union shop ... hope this revelation doesn't mean labor problems in the future.

Now, my Lite-On Manual is sorta backwards to part of what you've stated about low speed CDRWs in high speed drives. It says:

"When writing at 4x or higher speed, it's important to use media that is certified for recording at that speed (some recorders wisely refuse to write at at a high speeds [sic] on media not rated for it). This is especially critical when writing at 4x speed to CD-RW media. Another point to remember is that a drive that can write8 or 10x CD-RW media is backward compatible and will also read slower CD-RW media, but a drive that cannot write CD-RW media over 4x cannot use CD-RW media that has been recorded faster than 4x."

I interpret this as the tech writer who wrote the manual implies my 32X12X40X CD-RW will write 4X CD-RWs. And that seems, so far, to be backed up by reality.

As for the Orange Book, the manual says .... 4X, 2X and 1X CD-RWs should be compatible with Orange Book Part3 Vol 1, and 4X-10X CD-RWs should be compatible with Orange Book Part3 Vol 2. Of course, a 4X CD-RW would seemingly be in both?

I would agree with you about not being able to use 10X media in a 4X drive.

Maybe your computer is different. Mine works as above, YMMV,

I'm just going to say I have had problems burning Memorex CD-RWs. They are very iffy. Yes, I have been burning them at 4x.
