I need this computer to last a long time, its for college, so does this look good? What would you guys recommend or change. Thanks for looking 🙂

Dump the 30 gig IBM's in favor of either a 20 or 40 gig. The 15 gig/platter IBM's are the 75GXP's, & they're problematic to say the least. The 20 gig/platter are the 60 GXP's, they're newer, faster, & more reliable.

Viper GTS

Thanks, I was going to do a 2,40gig Western Digitals, but I had an issue with unix compatibility and also price. I was aiming for 1600 and I went over a bit.

SCSI what? Sorry im pretty new to building computers. By scsi do you mean scsi hard drives? What is the advantage of that?

Unless you can build a system by yourself, it's a pretty good deal. Of course I could get the 1ghz Pentium 3 with all the other things without the monitor and only 1 40gb hard-drive for $999 at Fry's.

Yes, but your system would have an intel chip in it... *shudders*
Plus you would need a monitor, and another hd...

Thanks for the info guys.

A bit pricey, there are better parts out there for cheaper🙂. Just check it against pricewatch

A7A-266 Asus mobo+Athlon 1.33 GHz - about $250 shipped
2 IBM 40 GB 7200rpm drives, about $220 shipped
Floppy drive - about $15 shipped
2x 256 mb PC133 about $58 shipped from Dell
Geforce2 GTS Pro retail - under $150 shipped
12x10x32x Lite-On - $79 shipped from newegg
Toshiba 12x DVD-ROM - about $60 shipped
Sound Blaster Live with Digital Out- about $50 shipped
56k Harmony Modem - didn't see on pricewatch
keyboard+mouse- roughly $50 for a decent combo
Dell 19" Monitor - $285 shipped
A good case and power supply could be around another $100
And if you must:
Windows 2000 Pro Full version retail - $250(OEM is about $140 shipped)

Of course that's if you have the time to build it yourself. Would the local store be willing to put it together for you for a fee if you ordered the parts yourself?

Dont EVER buy from a small time computer store.
1. You never know what kind of parts they put in.
2. Their "Warranty" is usually an oxymoron. Remember, a warranty is only as good as the company that writes it. They could pack everything in a Ryder truck overnight and leave.
3. Tech support. Same as #2.

If you want a decent computer, go to the IBM auctions on egay, dell, or gateway. I bought ONCE from a local store. WORST expereince ever. Dell has the best tech support and usually, bet price.

No, I know the guys who work at the store, its not a crappy store. They put exactly what I specified, by model numbers into the box. They have a one year guarentee against breakage. I just think I could do this for cheaper...
