Went out and test drove a few cars (2013 Camaro, 2014 Impala and a 2013 Mustang) and surprisingly I think I liked the Mustang the best. It was a good mix of what I was looking for... the Camaro was a big disappointment in my book unfortunately.

That said... the mustang is a used one - 2yrs warranty left, 3300 miles and is a v6 premium. Doesn't have any added packages from what I can tell unless the "Shaker" sound system isn't standard in the premium package.

The place had it listed at $23,595 but is now $22,289 as of today. I talked them into an additional $1k on my trade in and basically told them if they went up another $500 I'd start signing, but they wouldn't budge.

I didn't find anything wrong with the car at all - good paint / leather / etc... I mean it only had 3300 miles and the previous owner had it a year.

Should I hold out?

I would see if they could offer you a bit more of a warranty over the trade in $. When parts go bad that extra money on the warranty would mean a lot more.

Go look at other dealers and the private market and see if you can find a better deal to try to pressure them into offering you a good deal.

Were you looking at signing a 5 year deal on it or paying off sooner?

A friend just picked up a 0 Mile Ford Fiesta from a dealer and they worked out a 5 year / 100k mile warranty IIRC and free oil changes for life as long as he owns it.
 
brand new auto, true car is listing it at 24.4k x-plan is ~1k less. And I'm sure theres still more room to go down from there.
 
Buy a new one. I don't see the point in buying a used car to save a measly $1000 or $2000.

3300 miles over a year is probably a lot of short trips, and he probably never even changed the oil after the break in period.
 
what is it are you looking for in a car? the new 2014 impala just scored a 95 on the consumer reports scale car testing director is a friend of mine he likes it. better acceleration and braking then a VW GTI. does a lot of things well with no compromise
 
I have a 2012 Mustang V6 (base). I did comparison shop between the Camaro and Mustang at the time. The Camaro might look better (depending on your preferences) but the Mustang was more comfortable, handled a bit better, and had a larger trunk (not that anyone gets either car for the trunk, lol), and just seemed a better car overall.

I'm very happy with my car. Love it. Acceleration and power is great, handling is good, and it has decent gas mileage, usually hovering between 26 and 27 mpg combined, and i can push it over 34 mpg on the highway on longer trips. I never get less than 25 mpg except in traffic.

EDIT: If you can get a new 2014, I would go that route, but $22k isn't bad for very low mileage 2013 premium package Mustang, assuming regular service and the paperwork is in order.

If I could get a new 2014, I would consider getting it in green. 😀 Only color I might have gotten over black had it been available.

The Impala was impressive but I don't know if it is worth the asking price. Even employee pricing was $31k with quite a few of the options (I still wanted to tack on a moon roof), but the upgraded sound system wasn't even impressive and the seats were kind of hard I thought.

The ride and handling were nice and it was definitely responsive to the gas pedal.

I'm just looking for whatever I feel is the best experience. There are minimum features I'm looking for, but even those I'll trade off for the right car at the right price. I really like my current car which is a 2008 Grand Prix. Only 3 things that vehicle is lacking (IMO) is an MP3 input, better steering and then power.

I'd be shocked if that car got anywhere near 30mpg. I know you can't really go by the internal monitoring system but that showed an average of 18.6mpg over 4hrs +. Even after engine break in, 34mpg is a big leap. I'd prob buy it in a heartbeat if that were guaranteed though - my current car gets about 23-24mpg hwy.
 
I would buy a new one for 1-2k more

Also, few people have been able to get a 5.0 for $25k after incentives etc. Worth looking into IMO.

Yeah you guys got me lookin... I haven't seen any with the same features new, but ones with an extra package or 2 are $4-$5k more even after A-plan. Best I can do right now is X-plan. Although most of those are 2014 as the 2013 stock is low at this point.

If only I actually *needed* a car haha... My wife liked the Mustang more than I did. If it had a few more features I would have bitten... I'd like automatic headlights, a better sound system (the "shaker" is definitely better than stock, but still not impressive other than how loud it gets) and heated seats. But it seems just to get the auto lights and heated seats you gotta go to GT. They really try to push you to that next package 😉

To me, less is more. So features = bunch of garbage

Heck I wish I had a choice to remove crap from modern cars, they are filled with BS.

Also I just can't justify increasing a price even by 5-10% due to options....but the truth is MANY increase the price 20-50% with options.

I love features. I put a cap on how much I'll spend, but I'll see what I can get for my $$.

You drive a LOT in a life time, better make it comfortable 😉

It's money well spent IMO.

As far as I know, the dealer changes the oil when they're doing inspection. I think he's getting a good car at a good price. Why pay 2k more for something just because nobody has sat in it before?

Well I bought it! I found out some of the items I liked are on top of the base package... Didn't know the select-shift wasn't base and it also had an additional exterior design package which I didn't realize were some of the parts of the car I liked. In all about $1500 in additional upgrades.

Then... to boot, I talked them down another $900 (I got that +$500 I was asking them for on trade in and another $400 off the asking price).

Overall I think I didn't do too bad, effectively an additional $2400 "off" than what I was talking about before.

I pick it up Monday!

On a side note - today I went and test drove another mustang... it was a 2012 with 6k miles on it but it had glass roof, heated seats and auto headlights. Was slightly more than this car. But when I test drove it, it just felt sluggish comparatively - was a real turn off. I liked the color combo & the glass roof, but slightly older with about 14mo less warranty and I didn't like the drive as much... I wonder if it had anything to do with the slip axle they added to it? Not sure.

If it had the same feel during the drive I would have preferred it way more. It also felt like it was shifting funny. I immediately left there and test drove the one I bought and noticed the difference right away. So yay.
 
2012 and 2013 mustangs are effectively identical for your purposes. The glass roof doesn't add enough weight to change it at all. If I recall correctly you can't get a mustang without an LSD in either model year (though some have an upgrade to a torsen, but not on a v6). You convinced yourself they were different. Also, an LSD vs no LSD would never make a vehicle "sluggish".

I didn't convince myself of anything, but OK. I drove them both within an hour of each other. I have no idea why one felt like it was shifting funny and a bit rougher to steer. I'm not a car guy but I can tell when something is clearly different between the two. So get off your high horses.
