Good deal on this Dell?

Just jumped at refurb at Dell with 20% but am doubting myself now.

My current comp was last built in 2003 and I think I got totally desperate when I saw these deals....really dont know though. I think the deal stinks in hindsight....I want to cancel it.

Specs:

-- Inspiron Desktop 518 Mini-tower: Intel Core 2 Quad processor Q6600 (8MB L2, 2.4GHz, 1066FSB)

-- Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium

-- 16X DVD +/- RW w/dbl layer write capability

-- 640 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)

-- 4 GB DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz (2 DIMMs)

Total with shipping: $427.14

Ugh...I don't even know what sorta vid card it has 🙁

(but planned on installing a moderately priced vid card and upgrading the crap power supply)

It's probably integrated graphics, and you may not have to replace the PSU. Depends on which you get, and which video card you plan on getting. Chances are you'll end up with their delta made 350w, which will power up to about a 9800gt/4850

Good deal it sounds like!

Um the 518 lacks some features that the Inspiron 530/Studio 540 have. Otherwise I jumped on my current Studio 540 with Q6600, 6GB of PC6400 RAM, 640GB HD, Radeon 3450 HDMI vid card, dvd burner, and 19-1 media card reader for ~$480 at the beginning of this month. And yeah it came with the delta 350w power supply which seems to power my computer + 8800GT 512MB card fine. I'm contemplating on returning it though, because I want to be able to upgrade in the future and I love the tweakability of custom pcs. I haven't built a computer for awhile after settling on laptops for the past 3 years and now getting back into fullsize pcs.

You better cancel it fast, because on the dell refurbs they ship fast!

Yeah, Dell is NOT known for supplying "crap" power supplies. Most of them are well made and often can deliver power beyond their conservative ratings.

You likely got an onboard Intel graphics processor. Looks like the only factory add-on for the 518 is a Radeon HD 3450. But you'd have to look at your order to be sure.

You got over $400 in just parts and OS, so it's a pretty good deal if the features are what you need. It can certainly handle a mid-level graphics card.

More like $450 in parts & OS.

The only problem with Dell is you really cannot overclock the CPU (no OC support at all in the BIOS). Otherwise their systems are solid overall and usually a pretty good value.

And the PSU will probably support up to a 9800GT/4850 with no problems.

Heck, you may even be able to run a 4870. I just plopped my GTX260 in a q8300 rig around the office with the delta 350w and it booted fine. I didn't have the GPU loaded, but the CPU was running F@H and it seemed stable. However by that point I'd go ahead and replace the PSU just to err on the safe side 😉
