Good deal on this D7000 combo IMO

The refurb d7000 looks to be a decent price, but I personally would rather buy a used SB-600 or SB-700 from KEH or some place long before I stick a 3rd-party flash on my camera. The superb results from Nikon's iTTL and wireless CLS make 1st-party speedlights a no-brainer compared to 3rd-party compromises.

Considering you can get a used SB-600 for about $200, that leaves you $399 for a nice, used Nikon travel lens as well.

Dude that d7000 refurb has been that price for months now; I know, because I have been keeping track of it. Ultimately I decided that it wasn't worth the price, though.

Refurb D7000 at Adorama $749

Sigma 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 DC OS Macro HSM + EF-610 DG ST Flash $599

The flash unit is a bit slower than the Nikon made ones but it is really powerful, and the lens while it isn't the best at anything, dpreview said it is a great travel lens for it's size.

You can get good used D7000 for $600-$650 at FM
Flash: Get Metz 44 AF-1 for $180. It is cheap, great manufacturer and has USB firmware update capability.
I used it with D7000 and now with D800 no probs. Nikon 600 flash is crap.

18-250mm lens will have lots of compromises. No matter how you look at it.

In no way is the SB-600 "crap". Sure its Nikons badic CLS-capable speedlight, but the iTTL metering and wireless lighting capabilities make the 1st party Nikon speedlights excellent choices.

Nikon lenses are not crap. They aren't cheap, though, which is why there are third-party makers that are popular, similar to how Nikon lenses aren't crap, but there are some third-party lensmakers that undercut them, sometimes with lenses that are quite good like the Sigma 17-50mm OS HSM.
