Good deal on a decent microscope?

Looking for a microscope for an 11 year old. Amazon seems to have a reasonable selection, with decent models priced about $100.

Any other suggestions? Too bad Staples doesn't carry them...

Check out American Science Center in Chicago. They had some pretty reasonable 'scopes (new and used).

Edmund Scientific also had some decent student scopes at reasonable cost (and some accessories for future expansion - stages, light sources, etc).

Keep the magnification reasonable: scopes advertised with 1000X mag are probably crap (the Zeiss Axiomat, a $100,000.00+ microscope barely does 1000x (optically), and ~1300X is a theoretical limit for visable light (IIRC)).

Better to get higher quality low-power optics. Most junior science projects won't need much more than ~100x.

I think they both ASC and Edmund have have web sites.

Good Luck

Scott
