I saw this the other day, and it didn't look that bad, though I didn't get the model #. Did anyone else see this system and catch it? $359 for a Dolby Digital-capable 5.1 system seemed like a pretty good deal to me.

Rather than this I'd get the Kenwood 503 which has DTS capability and is still under $500.

My 2 cents worth....Kenwood is a great middle of the road piece of equipment. I used to dream of owning one :) They are better than brands like technics, aiwa, some Sony's and JVC's, but Kenwood still isn't as good as some of the offerings of Onkyo, Yamaha, and Dennon. Look for mid-ranged pieces from those manufacturer's at a great deal. Yamaha has a new 596 that looks pretty hot. Low on features (only 2 S-Video I think), but great build and awesome sound. I would think this receiver could be found in the sub $400 range. My local dealer stickers it at $499 (full retail I think). I would take that receiver over any of the cheaper Kenwoods. Only thing about the Yamaha, Onkyo, and Dennon....They don't like mail order vendors too much. That makes it tougher to find really great deals on them. Yamaha is so particular, they come out with a mail order or discount store versions of some of there receivers.

i think he is looking at a complete system (5pc speaks, sub, and reciever), not just a reciever. right andrewr?
for htib, this is pretty inexpensive. mid-end subs alone cost this much.

Please do tell, or feel free to email me.

Costco also has a similar package with JVC equipment. RX-6008VBK receiver, sub-woofer w/8" woofer and 5 speakers. The price is $359 - $369.

Also, if you want to build your system and purchase some better components, I'd suggest a combination of retailers. I utilized Dealtime.Com to search for a receiver. I found the JVC RX-8000VBK (2nd from the top) for only $269 @ eCost. Since I purchased a CDR, the price was over $350 and the ground shipping was free. If you purchase only the receiver, the shipping charge is a whopping $37 for UPS Ground. $269 is the best price you'll find on this receiver. For a sub-woofer, Costco has the KLH 10", 120 watt sub-woofer for $99. Again, you won't find a better price on this sub-woofer and at 35 Lbs., I don't think you'd want to order it on-line because most vendors want more, plus you'll rack up some high shipping costs.

One small thing, the remotes on the Kenwood recievers suck! And, its difficult to program a learning remote to use all of the Kenwood features because the Kenwood remote is a 2-way remote, so you have to position the learning remote so that the original remote can see the stereo and learning remote.

The kenwood 503 is the system to get for someone that wants decent Dolby 5.1 and also DTS at a low-end price. The best thing is to buy each item seperately but to get good equipment you are easily going to spend double the money or more. The 503 is an ideal and very affordable starter system that gives good performance for the person who is not an audiophile fantatic.
