Good computer retailers / proposed homebuilt system

I have a friend that wants to buy a new computer soon. He wanted my advice on good places to buy a new computer. I built my last computer and I mainly look for good places to buy hardware so I can upgrade my computer. So I haven't really haven't been paying attention to companies that sell new systems. I told him that Dell, Gateway would be a good place to start looking, but they are overpriced I think. Do you know of any places that allow you to customize and build your computer without being too high in cost.

I'm still considering building him a computer with the hardware he wants. My only reservation is I've only built one computer which I'm currently using. I'm pretty sure I could successfully build him a new computer. But I haven't payed that much attention lately to all the new chipsets etc.

I was thinking in the not to distant future of upgrading to that ECS K7S5A SiS® 735 SOCKET A MOTHERBOARD with a 1.4 Athlon. Would that be a good board and cpu without major compatabilty problems. If I did build him one I would try building with this motherboard and cpu. I thought I might as well just list what parts I would put in his system and you can critique them.

ECS K7S5A- $70 shipped from newegg.com
Athlon 1.4- around $110 shipped newegg
256 or 512MB PC 2100 DDR Ram from crucial almost free lol $32 or $64

IBM #IC35L040AVER07 40GB 7200RPM - OEM 99 shipped newegg
CREATIVE LABS SOUND BLASTER LIVE! 5.1 - OEM $36 shipped newegg
Nic card unknown brand what do you recommend? $30
Modem hopefully non winmodem he doesn't have broadband yet but might get it soon $40-50
Antec SX 840 with 400 watt supply maybe around $100 shipped have to check
Toshiba 16X dvd rom about $75 shipped newegg
LITE-ON LTR-16102B 16x10x40 CD-RW - RETAIL 90 shipped newegg
Keyboard not sure about $20 locally
MS Intellimouse Optical- He already has one.
Monitor Samsung SyncMaster 950p 19" around $200-225 shipped.
He has some Altec Lansing 3 piece sub sat now, don't need.
Software- I was thinking OEM XP home upgrade about $99
Cables etc overlooked items $30
Total around $1191 if I added right.

Do you have any ideas on my proposed system or any good places that would allow him to build a similar system for a similar price. Thanks for your help. Doug

Dell, allows customization but only with the parts they have. You can tell your friend just to put one together just like you did. You can help him on this one and then learn along the way. If there are any problems you can always get back on line at AT and get some answers!
