3700+ SD to 3800+ X2 if you are willing to spring for the extra $100. Not saying that the 3700+ SD is a bad processor, I have it, its a beast, but the 3800+ X2 is more future ready.

but by the op selecting the gpu he did tells me that games is important, and a 3700diego will beat a 3800x2, and for some time.

Well..true yes, and SD is a better overclocker(if he was overclocking I suggest the DFI lanparty nf4 SLI-DR), I suppose when X2 start being used in games more he can sell his SD and buy a good X2.

I would imagine that multi-threaded games are more common before the 7800 GTX becomes obsolete, this is all speculation of course :D

I agree with mOeeOm. It's silly not to choose the X2 given a small $100 difference. The extra fps the 3700+ gives you is nothing compared to the advantages of dual-core.

Well no the only reason I recommended the 3800+ X2 is because it is more future ready, it will be good when multireaded games start coming out, but for now the 3700+ SD destroys it. If he's like me and closes all programs before playing games or doesn't multitask much, the 3700+ is for him.

the problem is that noboby really knows when mulithreaded games will come out, and be somewhat stable. hell we can't even get a single threaded game like bf2 to come out and be stable before 2 patches (at least they are working on much better than bf:v). it could easily be years.

Isnt it the new oblivion? Morrowind supposed to be multithreaded and isnt it coming out late 2005? I know UT2007 will multithreaded but who knows when that will come out.

now the companies just tease us and make us want hardware that will be obsolete, or at least slow by then, when the games can actually utilize it :(

i probably won't build a new machine until the dcs are actually utilized, but will upgrade my gpu since i mostly do fps...

Gothic 3, Alan Wake, Age of Empires 3 will be multithreaded code too, but would u really want to buy an expensive CPU today, and see the first multithreaded game come out in mid 2006, (remember 64bit CPU`s and WinXP64...transition took/takes years) But anyways imo a X2 3800+ makes no sense for a gamer, since it would be bottlenecking the Gpu all the time. No disresepct to X2, but many ppl just dont need yet.

Your parts all look fine, except if you want to save $20 on the graphics card, the MSI one is only $480 @ Newegg. I don't suggest that case though. The Antec P160 is only ~$100 now, and it's nice and shiny alluminum, and it should cancel out noise a lot better too. If you do stick with that case though, make sure you buy a seperate power supply. The ones are comes with cases are usually crappy. Go with a good 450W+ PSU from a quality manufacturer like Antec, Fortron, Sparkle, OCZ, Enermax, XClio, etc. Make sure it has at least ~24A on the +12V rail(s).

pata will be around for a long time. get what ever drive is cheaper since performance is bascially the same except for the raptors. if a sata is only a couple of $$$ more than fine, but don't expect it to perform better than a pata

Get a better PSU. Enermax Noisetakers are good & cheap.
BenQ DW1640 is likely the best DVD-/+RW if you need one.
Maybe go for 2 GB RAM? Look at teh OCZ value stuff.

Oh, & don't get x64 XP. Get XP Pro.

There's too many driver issues with the x64 version of XP.

yeah i close all my other programs moeeom.

and unless x64 gets better i think im going for reg pro then.

and the only reason i got that case was cuz of psu, and if most of u think it wont do, im probably gonna find another case.

thanks fer the help!

Now pardon me if I'm wrong, but is there just ever a reason that if you doing single core, to get anything other than the 3000+Venice ;). I mean when it overclocks so easily to processors like the 3700 and so forth, why spend the extra cash???

just change the fsb and memory divider if needed and maybe voltage for cpu, that is all...also, with the 7800gtx, i bet the 3000venice would be fine with any of the current games, since they are mostly gpu limited

personally i like antec cases and the sonata II is a nice one with a 450W p/s in it.

ya, but Morrowind is a Huge game... I don't think it's the multithreading that would be holding it up... I'm sure someone could write some kind of program/compiler that would make programming for it easy, then have a human clean up the hairy parts. Shouldn't be too hard for a good programmer I would think.
