Good Clicky Keyboards

Many people have seen the Dans Data article about those old IBM clicky keyboards.

I was wondering if anyone has either purchased them lately or know where to get one that might have a windows key. I only ask cause I love the response of those old spring keyboards and would love to pick one up... are there any listed that you know of at the egg? Or elsehwere with that spring-loaded tactile response?

Thanks...

i've used those keyboards at work for the last couple of years, and it seems to me as though I type a little faster/more accurately with them than with my soft MS keyboard at home.. dunno, might be hallucinating, but I kinda like those keyboards too.

you can find a clicky keyboard w/ a windows key at PCKeyboard.com but be warned they are expensive compared to a normal dome membrane keyboard. also if your willing to settle for an old Ibm model M they can typicaly be found on ebay for under $20 delivered.

I use this http://www.ortek.com/productDetail.asp?ProductId=P20030704134249
Good keyboard, same key switches as the old IBM keyboards. There is no windows key, but I just programed PF24 as the windows key. Think I paid around $120 for it. Worth every cent.

Edit: The 12 function keys on the left side (where God intended them to be) is why I picked up this keyboard, they work very well with the cad program I use (left hand on the function keys, right hand on the mouse).

Sounds like you're looking for a buckling spring keyboard. PCKeyboard.com makes keyboards like these, although they are pretty utilitarian - no media keys or the like. It should give you the tactile feel you're looking for, if you don't mind paying a bit more. Enjoy. 🙂

[edit] Didn't see Arcanedeath's post a couple above mine. 🙂

That's awesome... I miss the mechanical keyboards too... I never thought about asking for this. Thanks OP.
Tas.

Northgate imported a good keyboard with the right feel (and sound) for a long time, and it had the "two- way" Function Key layout. I loved them -- and when I was using WordPerfect a lot, they were favorites. But all of mine had logic board failures, and despite its quiet keys, I've had good service from a MS Natural that replaced the last Northgate. (Servicing them exceeds the cost of a new MS Natural by a LOT.)

:disgust:

yea i saw that too, and yea his obsession has been written about before. i just cant stand noise..i think the microsoft one i have now is too loud😛

If you can find a Focus 2000/2001 keyboard, it had nice mechanical keyswitches (either Alps or Alps clone) - I think they still make it but it's hard to find. A lot less expensive than the OTK (One True Keyboard) from PCKeyboard. That Ortek monstrosity is so far from the OTK layout I could throw chunks...
