Good choice for a Slot 1 mobo???

I want to upgrade my mobo. Is it even worth the effort?

I have a Slot 1 P3 650 100mHz FSB.

I want onboard ATA66(100 would be nice)

AGP 2X (4x better)

USB ports (at least 2)

PC100 support (PC133 would be nice)

Does this board exist? I have been searching and can't find it.

Thanks

The BX 440 chipset does not support alot the features your looking for. The 815 chipset supports all the things your looking for but I can only recall Abit making a 815 slot 1 board and that board was a POS in my opinion.

Waddya mean? The only feature he wants not supported by a decent
BX board is the ATA66 controller. AGP 2X and USB are available on
many BX boards, and PC100 is supported on every BX board.

Get a BX board and a Promise ATA100 card, and you're in business.

i815 is another option, though its design as a budget board means
that it may not have enough expansion capacity or may be undesirable
for other reasons (integrated audio, etc.)

Whatever you do, DON'T get a VIA chipset board. There are VIA
chipset boards around that provide the options you seek, but they
suck.

We wanted 4X Apg and BX does not supoort 4X, PC 133 is not officialy supported by BX either or ATA66 either.

I would avoid Abit completly. If you just want 2X Apg and pc100 just about any BX board will fit your needs. I recommend the Soyo 6BA+ or Asus P3BF or MSI BXmaster.

Rain,

Would the Abit board be OK for someone that does not want to OC. I hear what you are saying, but if the board will be stable at normal clock speeds and has built in RAID, is it still a turd?

bacillus - thanks for the link!

Stability has been a issue for some folks but not for me. I personally can not recomend Abit because of their poor quality control and high rate of return of defective boards.

I think you want a Soyo SY-6BA+IV or SY-6BA+100

I had the +IV and it rocked.. I loved it... onboard ATA/66, whereas the +100 has onboard ATA/100 i believe is the main difference.

stability was great and overclockability could not have been better!

133MHz (PC133) runs great on a BX board (The Soyo) as I had no stability problems at all running at 140 FSB.
at 140 FSB my AGP BUS was somewhere around 95 but was still running stable... I can't stress enough how little importance the "officially supported" deal is with the 133 BUS on a BX board.. it works so well!

and as for AGP 2X.. please don't tell anyone else you wanted a board based on the fact it supports AGP 4X.. it's completely meaningless.. the real world increase is Nil and even the synthetic increase is so miniscule it will look like it's not even working, so to speak.

so for what you want, the BX-based 6BA+IV or 100 models would be awesome for you... if you still want official support for the other things you'll have to go to something like an Asus P3V4X which IMHO is not as good in almost every aspect and I think most ppl will agree.

The bottom line is: If you want a slot1 mobo, it's gotta be BX. they still run great to the day and there is no need going to an officially supported 133 chipset like the Apollo, it's not as good!

The Choice is yours.... I'm just here to try and help. 🙂
