Stopped by Fry's tonight and picked the $79 combo, AM2 4800+ and ECS PM6100, added the 2x1GB Corsair memory $59 (before $40 rebate), and got the Zalman 8700 fan for $29, out the door at $183 incl tax. Now I need to decide on a good about $100 video card and stir around the bone yard for a case etc.

Games played are HL2 and C&C3 at 1600x1200 on an ancient 21" crt, whats a good balance in a video card for this system?

My son is plugging for the 8800 GS, while I have been tempted by the low price on 8600 GT around $60 AR. I'll try some searching to find a deal on the 8800 GS.

Definitely try for the 8800GS, it's a sharp drop to the 8600.

8600gt sucks

The three cheapest "good" cards right now are 8800gs, 3850, 9600gt.

8800gs is pretty close to $100, 9600gt was close too, but they jacked the price up yesterday, 3850... I dunno. It's the slowest of the three in most games so unless it's cheapest too I wouldn't recommend it.
