So I'm looking to spend some Christmas cash, and I've decided I want to get a DVD player. What brands/features, should I look for? I'm aiming for something around $200, and I don't care for a changer, a single-disc is all I want.
Any advice?

You are going to get 4 billion different responses to this here..

I reccomend going over to vcdhelp and just reading all the comparisons they have. They list just about every DVD player out there.

(I sugsest the Samsung M-300, plays (s)vcds, dvds, mp3s, opticall and coaxial digital sound out...)

I used to be a big fan of SONY stero stuff ... bought a $300 unit a year and one month ago. Now it is out of warranty and the "Sucker" wont play any of my DVDs or CDs... I didn't get the extended warranty...... So you may wanna think about investing in the longer warranty programs most stores have.

just my .02C

Another vote for Panasonic DVD-RV31S/K. I have one... very good quality, plays a bunch of formats... vcds, mp3s... Great buy, esp for the price. I doubt u can get a better dvd player for under $200.

Dosent play SVCDs though.. its what made me back off on it. Plus it didnt have a coaxial digital out, only optical. My reciever only had coaxial digital in.. I wouldnt have been able to get surround sound with that, which is why I went with the Samsung one.

The Panasonic DVD Player that Viper GTS recommended would be my first choice.

If you want something really cheap, that plays everything and is region hackable get an Apex.

Also check out the Toshiba SD-1700 for $99.99 at your local JC Penny's B&M.

<< Panasonic DVD-RV31S/K (S is silver, K is black)

Readily available for $160 or so. I consider it to be among the best purchases I've ever made. That plus my Wega makes DVD's look very nice.

I second that! I bought the silver one for myself, and it's awesome! It's also rated as the #2 dvd player in Consumer Reports! :)
