Good, Cheap cars

Hey guys, I'm looking for a good car that will last me quite awhile and will be very dependable. I always keep cars well maintained but need to go from a nice audi a4 to something around 2-4 grand.

I am thinking of honda civics, etc. Compact cars.

any input is great, I want more info on american, euro and japanese cars.

thanks!!!

geo/chevy prizm?

It's just a rebadged corolla, but cheaper resale prices. Some dealership locally had a 98 for like 5K and I almost want to pass off my car and get that.

perfect for a cheap, reliable car.

thanks guys, I will go and check geo/chevy prizm's out. Hopefully they have good leg/head room like civic's.

Ohh I also said I will never even consider a saturn, pontiac, daewoo or pontiac. This is due to my past experience of what I have seen.

I just wish I could find a good honda for cheaper, they hold their damn value so well.

So nissan sentra's and maximas are good too?

Also anyone have many good bookmarks with info on older cars? I know of edmunds and a couple others but they are not too good.

well you can get a 03 Hyundai for cheap. they have crappy re-sale value.

Over the years they have improved the reliability on them. If not look for a ford escort. they are good cars and cheap to repair if something goes wrong.

Honda's are great BUT even used ones are still expensive.

And exactly what have you seen?

I know there are plenty of Saturns that have hit over 200k miles and are going strong. They're an econobox, so don't expect much luxury, but that IS what you are looking for. The Ion mentioned earlier uses the Ecotec from GM, which is pretty much on every GM car that uses a 4 cylinder, its a very reliable engine.

My car is at 88k miles. Parts have broken, and thats to be expected on any car, some more than others. Mine hasn't been that expensive to fix. I'd say my biggest problem was a weird transmission problem where one of the bolts got loose and 2nd gear was strange, it cost about $300 to fix. Other than that, no big problems. I drive my car pretty tough too, I go to some autocross sessions and have put ALOT of runs on my car.

Pontiac? My brother has a TransAm with its "unreliable" V8 with over 190k miles on it, and its still running very strong with no major problems. He pushes his car hard as well.

I can't comment on Daewoo, I don't have any experience with them.

As far as I'm concerned, aside from a few brands (VW to name one), most domestics and imports can run very reliablely, but it all depends on how well the owner takes care of the car.

Sentra and Maxima are a world apart. I don't think you'll be buying a decent Maxima for 4k anytime soon.

you might want to look at car rental companies... that's where my friend just bought his car.

the price was good, and since the company kept it constantly well-maintained, it's in great condition.

But don't the people who rent them abuse them because it's not their own car?
