I have a pile-o-crap burner with even worse software package, looking for some decent software for it before I give up on it.

I use it for system backup and digital photos.

I like nero (no automated system backup), and it's usually cheap. I only use other programs for specialized burning applications (clone CD for duplicating CDs I've burnt with nero, just because it's fewer steps to copy them, for example)

Yep, Nero

A lot of times you get a free 52x24x burner to go with it ... (like $45 shipped at dell)

Is the Nero software that comes with the burner only applicable to that burner?

Nero comes in many flavors. You can directly purchase from them for I believe around $20. But they usually come bundle with a lot of burners. If they are bundled, then yeah you may only use it for that particular BRAND of burner.

Or maybe you could find a cheap/OEM version of it on eBay; think I got Nero for around $10.

I got Nero along with my $50 Lite-on, since I considder Nero good enough to pay $50 for by itself, I guess you could say I bought Nero and got a good burner as a bonus :)

Same train of thought here, but replace $ with £ ;)
