The NEC and Benq drives mentioned are both good. I suggest that since DVD burners can be had for $40us or less that you buy 2 burners instead of a cd/rw-dvd-rom drive.

I have been using Samsung drives for a while now, and have found nothing wrong with them so far - nice software bundle in the retail box, quiet operation, no complaints in burning as yet.

One of the better CD/DVD ROM drives is sold by Asus. For burners I like Plextor but they aren't cheap. There is one or two Plextor models to avoid (based on Panasonic/Teac chipsets) - how you can tell is that it/they is/are the only one(s) that reads/writes DVD RAM disks. The ones based on Sanyo or Phillips are all as good or better than most.

Oh, yes. Things have changed.
If you dig around you can get dual-layer burners for 30 bucks.

But I still prefer to go with something brand-name and a little more expensive for stuff like that.
Sony or Phillips or another good name. It saves hassle in the long run.

Buy a burner from Sony, the company that brought us the most evil "copy protection" malware so far?

Sounds like a plan. NOT.

Philips in turn have always been against deliberate screwing with disc standards, so if given these two as a choice, I'd go with Philips.

Sony made StarForce?
I did not know that.

AFAIk, Sony didn't create StarForce but they were the first (only) to use it.

Pure readers do have their advantages: They're even cheaper, and they're a lot faster in random access. That's because their laser pickup isn't nearly as heavy. For the same reason, they use to last longer under heavy usage.

so which cd/dvd rom drives are good? also what do you look for, when choosing a cd/dvd rom? If I were using it to read game discs, etc., would i be looking for something thats "xx" fast or reads well, etc?
