I'm going to be buying 500ft of Cat5e cable and I just want to know what's a good reputable brand?

I'm seeing Belkin and Cables 2 Go pop up a lot, anyone have any advice?

Are you buying stranded or solid core wire? Whats the wire for?

If you are simply doing a one-time pull in your house go with whatevers cheap - shouldnt move much so you shouldnt have a problem.

If you plan to have some rugged use as patch cables try to find something with a thicker jacket...Just go down to frys and take a look at some of the wire, see which one looks more suitable for your use.

It seems like cat6 on average is almost double the price of 5e... is it really worth it? Are we even close to using it to potential?

LOL, and a $200 PSU for a Desktop is really worth it???

As always, what you buy, use, etc. is a matter what actually is planned and future time perspective.

If you wire into the walls it does not make sense to save few $$ on Cat5e, put CAT6.

If you need few patch cables and you short of Cash buy the least expensive that you can buy.

I do not think that Belkin is a Brand of Cables, they just put cables in plastic wrappers and charge 1000% markups, that is why you see them in the Mega Stores, because of the Markup they provide easy revenue (no support is needed;)).

If you need the Cables for a very Hi Load powerful corporate system you might want to get some thing special, for small network it does not matter what you buy as long as you buy commercially made cable and not trying you own crimping.

Home Depot has a 1000' roll for <<50$. Comptergeeks used sell a kit with crimper, tester and 1000' cable for 40$. There are many online stores selling cat5 cables. Anything Belkin is way overpriced.

If you to plan to wire a home or office please use the services of professional installer -apart from the crimping skills there is a whole bunch of good practices that have to followed, and the connections need to be checked with a good tester - to avoid future problems.
