Good camping place with swimming nearby in the bay area

Okay, seems like a bunch of us are from the bay area, so I figured this was worth a shoot.

Anyways, I've been trying to find a good campsite with a beach or swimming area nearby for the past 4-5 years since I moved down here. The only place we've found so far with a decent swimming area was up in Redding (Shasta). It was pretty awesome, but the drive's kinda far for camping. So, does anyone from the bay area have a suggestion for a good camping area with a good lake or something nearby? Most of my friends and my g/f can't swim very well (I know, I was totally surprised when I found out, too), so anyplace on the coast is out (Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, etc).

Man, I was so desperate for a good place last year that I took her and a bunch of friends over to Modesto... the lake turned out to be some artificial reservoir that was totally green.. 🙁

Thanks...

you want a beach, but not the coast??????

I live is Santa Cruz. dont come here, we have a coastline.

seriously though, I much prefer the ocean to lakes.

lol me and my cousins were driving down from sanjose to goto a santa cruz beach, we were about 10 miles outa santacruz and found a beach called bonny doon beach and there was 2 naked guys there....later when we got home i looked it up on the net and it was a nude beach...lol

<< But, it was realy nice beach, there was only 15 people there, quiet, and no trash. >>

LOL! I know where that is. I have no idea how you got there on accident from SJ though. Did you drive down 9 rather than 17?

You might wanna try the Marin Headlands. I've been there several times, but not for camping. It's really nice there. I'm pretty sure they have a camp site there.

notfred: Well, they can't really swim that well. Last time I took a bunch of them to half moon bay and one of the guy's almost drowned!!!! I've gone down to Santa Cruz a couple times and it seemed like the waves were fairly large. Basically, these friends (especially my g/f) can't swim worth an a$$, so calm water's the only option, which usually means some sort of lake. I'd definitely not have a problem with the waves (unless the undertow was totally weird), but it's most for my friends that I'm worried. I'd feel like s@#t if I got one of them killed. 😉

arent we ignoringa big question here: why do you want to goto a place where there is swimming when your friends cant swim?

Maybe he likes swimming??

I got an idea: go to tahoe and rent a boat. Boat == fun 🙂

Damn, there seem to be a bunch of us from the bay area up at this time of day. I thought I was the only one that had flexible hours for work. 🙂
