I think the Republicans are idiots on this issue, but the closing of things like the Vietnam Memorial and WWII Memorial only serve to paint the President as extremely petty. It just empowers incidents like Gov. Walker scoring points on that petty and vindictiveness. I'm really not sure who his advisers are or if he just has a ton of yesmen around him.

i think the GOP are idiots on forcing the shutdown. BUT with how its going on is insane. it makes Obama look like a child. Though it won't change nothing. Those that dislike him are still going to dislike him. Those that love him are going to keep the head in the sand..

WTF is the dept. of parks forcing parks that are self funded to shut down? I agree with Walker on this one 'if the parks are self funded'. If not, then Wisconsin needs to pay the bill.

Edit: Who pays the employees, the federal government or Wisconsin? Regardless if Wisconsin pays or not (i.e. self funded), if the proper budgetary appropriations are in place, I could see how the federal government could shut it down. In that case, would Wisconsin pay the federal workers directly (seems that they would have to).

The Washinton Times is using Breitbart as a source for a story that makes no sense whatsoever. The very conservative Wisconsin State Journal has nothing on the story. Governor Walker's website has nothing on the story. I'm going climb out on a limb and declare that the story is bullshit.

Governor Walker's website does have a press release bragging about the state winning a $32 million federal grant.

Edit: I found a more detailed story in the Milwaukee Sentinel. The story is no where near what the Washington Times purports. Some WI state parks receive some federal funds. They are not allowed to spend them for the duration of the shutdown. The rest is squawking.

How about a link? or should i really believe what you say?
http://www.jsonline.com/news/statep...r-federal-shutdown-b99111708z1-226154141.html

The state Department of Natural Resources on Wednesday refused a directive from the National Park Service to close a host of popular state properties because of the federal government shutdown.

The park service ordered state officials to close the northern unit of the Kettle Moraine, Devil's Lake, and Interstate state parks and the state-owned portion of the Horicon Marsh, but state authorities rebuffed the request because the lion's share of the funding came from state, not federal coffers.

Oh my.

The tight fisted Walker only came up with the money to keep joint operations open as a political ploy, which is fine, if dishonest in the usual Walker fashion.

It seems unlikely that other Repub governors will do the same.

Another story in the same vein.
http://www.miamiherald.com/2013/10/03/3668028_p2/shutdown-day-3-food-distributor.html

Charter guides received a message from the National Park Service this week informing them that they are not permitted to take clients fishing in Florida Bay until the feds get back to work. That means that more than 1,100 square miles of prime fishing is off limits between the southern tip of the mainland to the Keys until further notice.

The closing affects not only fishing guides, but anyone with a license to conduct business in the park, including tour operators and paddling guides — anyone with a Commercial Use Authorization permit, said Dan Kimball, superintendent of Everglades and Dry Tortugas national parks.

Biscayne National Park is also off limits. Enforcement rangers will be on duty, Kimball said.

Capt. Mike Makowski, owner of Blackfoot Charters in Key Largo, estimates this eliminates 60 percent to 70 percent of his hunting grounds.

“This is going to put a lot of guys together in a small area close to the park,” Makowski said. “It’s going to be even worse on the weekend when we’re going to have to compete with the recreational anglers.”

Lord! This fucking forum would argue about what color the sky is. Common sense....out the window, and we all wonder what is wrong with Congress. I would think anyone from any political party affiliation would see the futility in keeping a park or memorial closed even when no personnel are needed to keep it open. It's right along the line of accusations of "staging" WW2 vets at their memorial as some kind of political ploy. Does everything have to be so left or right? Fucks sake. This line of thinking makes me angry, an angry Irishman.

The accusation wasn't that the vets were staged. The accusation, with good reason, is that Republican Congressmen used the occasion as a grandstanding photo-op. These same Republican Congressman had just put 200,000 vets out of work.

The recurring theme here is that the Republicans threw a rock through the window and thereby broke it and now want to insist the window isn't really broken but that the administration simply refuses to make the window work. The Republicans shut down the government. That has consequences and a lot of people have gotten financially hurt as a direct result of this Republican tantrum.

Apparently grey....if compared to the state of our country. Divide and conquer, divide and conquer.

That's not the sky, it's the clouds and even that is an illusion because they aren't really gray, just blocking enough sunlight to appear that way. :sneaky:

Yes, the story in the Washington Times was totally accurate as was the Fox story, you jumped the gun, blamed Breitbart and got proven a liar. Even TPM's story backs up what was said on Fox.
Nope. The Wisconsin DNR got some money from the feds to operate the parks. They got a stop work order on the grant due to the Republican shut down of the federal government. The DNR chose to keep operating using state funds. Defiance not found. It isn't even clear from the Milwaukee Sentinel story that Walker was in any way involved in the decision.

Walker's statement, as reported by the Washington Times, concerning closing federal lands is silly. Walker has no authority to close federal lands whether he has the desire to or not. The National Parks in Wisconsin are closed. The National Forest offices in Wisconsin are closed. The National Forests are open except for developed campgrounds and recreation areas, same as in every other state with National Forests.

Of course there is politisizing taking place.....on both sides of the aisle. That's the little nugget that most people are failing to recognize. BTW both parties are to blame for the shutdown and both are engaged in the same tit for tat tantrums at the expense of the common citizen. Above it all, in my mind, I'm more appreciative that these vets are able to see something so important to them before they pass even with the current kids running the show.

By the way, you spelled 'gray' as 'grey'. I know it is OK to spell it both ways but I prefer 'gray' so get that straight next time, OK?

Was going to bring that up.....didn't. I'm sticking with grey as a matter of principle and to keep arguments alive.
