Good C2D temps

Got an E4400 @ 3 Ghz with default voltage and an XP-90 heatsink/92mm fan. I'm wondering what I should be seeing as a temp for idle with Coretemp. I live in Miami and with the AC on I have mid 40s when idle. No AC bumps it to low 50's. Is this alright or should I have better temps with my setup?
 
E4400 should be good up to 75C under Orthos large mode. Real-world load will be 10C cooler. This chip comes with 100C Tjunction. Use Coretemp 0.95.4 to obtain the core temperature.
 
As SerpentRoyal (Royal Python/Ball Python enthusiast?...side note, sorry) said, be sure to use Coretemp (or Intel TAT...same thing, basically) to measure your temps. The monitoring apps that come w/motherboards are typically off by quite a bit.

For example; I have a Gigabyte DS3 Rev1.0 running the latest BIOS. The EasyTune app that comes from Gigabyte says my idle temp is 32C. That's the SOCKET temp; the temp of the air in the socket, under the CPU.

Intel TAT/Coretemp, which reads the actual sensor imbedded in the core of the chip says my idle temp is 45C. That's quite a difference.

Anyway, I have a C2D E6400 overclocked to 3.20GHz @ 1.340 volts, cooled by an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro/Arctic Silver 5. HSF speed is controlled by the BIOS (set to Auto for all speed-related settings.)

Typically, the temp in the computer room is roughly 26C/79F. Under high stress (dual Orthos running overnight), Intel TAT reports a 58-60C temp. It's never gone over 60C (that I've seen) and I've had not a single crash/blue screen. I do have good case airflow and that makes a world of difference.

After a few hours of gaming, my CPU temp is typically around 53-55C and drops rapidly back to idle temps after exiting the game.

I've read that my temps are "decent." *shrug* As I said, I've not had any crashes, so I guess I'm just dandy. 🙂

I have a E6550 clocked to 3.1 with a Zalmann 9700 LED where the idl temp used to be around 35-38 and load at 50-53C. I actually just adjusted VCore voltage down maybe .08 or so and apparently it went down to 13-14C idle and 26C at load. I've ran Orthos for a while and it seems stable.
 
I guess that means my temps of around 50 are good considering its around 27 degrees at the moment. Still, I get the feeling I should be in the low 40's or even high 30s given that I'm at default voltages at 3Ghz. Is this an unreasonable expectation with air cooling?
 
Using intel tat I get around 25c on each core. After using orthos for a while I go to 32 and 34c. I am running at 3.08 gigs and for cooling I am using a Scythe Ninga cooler with 120mm fan that spins at 1500 rpms. These 6550 are great chips. Runing with a 1.35 volts. The thing holding me back is the cheap pc 4200 ram (which is running at 880 mhz with 2.1 volts) I am going to get some micron D9 ram to see if I can get 3.5 gigs out of this cpu 🙂 I think I am on the really low side of the temperatures. Could tat be reporting the temperature wrong (not that I am compplaining)?
 
I don't trust any temp readings from my system. It says my E6600 @ 3GHz (1.17V) gets around 60C during Orthos. This is with a Ninja and an 1100RPM 120mm fan. If I place my finger on the small heatsink that sits right above the CPU (below the main tower) it doesn't even feel warm. If the CPU really was 60C, the base of the cooler wouldn't feel luke warm. It really doesn't make sense that such a huge cooler on a ~60W CPU would produce such hot temps either. Well, maybe it would if the contact between CPU and heatsink was really bad, but the thing is that my E6600 seems pretty flat.
 
Quino, something seems wrong to me if you are getting low 30's using Orthos. Don't think even water cooling can achieve that.
 
I know 🙂 Coretemp gives me a more accurate picture I believe. I get 36 and 39c idle and
51 and 52c with orthos. Still the tat stress function gets the E6550 hotter than orthos 🙂 Waiting for better ram and I will slap my watercooling too 🙂 Gaming does not even come close to the temps that orthos or tat give me 🙂 in core temp after playing world in conflic or the demo for quake wars I get 44 and 46c 🙂

They all seem flat, doesn't mean they are. The curve is too small to see. If you want to check, take out the cpu and heatsink, lay them upsidedown with the IHS against the base, then shine light through it and if any light gets through, you have a curved base.

That's what I did. Although not perfect it is actually almost flat.
