we went from a 170 MB hard drive on the first one to a 420 MB on the next machine and the difference was amazing

i remember thinking "i'll never run out of this much hard drive space!"

Nice to see many old timers in here. I will always have good memories of the 2000s AT forums. I was more of a tinkerer than a hardcore PC enthusiast, but the hot deals forum and a lot of the OT posts about my other interests drew me in and kept me here for many years before I moved on. It is impossible to have a forum of this size without arguments and drama, but it would not have lasted this long without people doing the work to keep it going (largely on a volunteer basis); I appreciate those who have participated in those efforts over the years. All in all, I am thankful that I was part of this little corner of the internet.

People are coming out of the woodwork.

Except for Anand. I imagine him reacting to the news with an audible sigh while shrugging his shoulders. Followed by a quick glance of his investment portfolio with the bulk of it being from the sale of this site to Purch.

Yeah I imagine it's also kind of bittersweet in a way, knowing that your own creation is being shut down. But I'm sure in the end he still feels he did the right thing. Maybe they can get him to hit the power button on the server when they do shut it down. 😛

I am confident its demise will be poor forum performance be it from some unknown future browser update or whatever and money is not spent on the forums to correct its performance. The day will come.
Hopefully it happens that way because it will allow us to plan what the next place is.
A sudden shutdown would kill everything.

As a mod I get an ad free experience without an ad blocker. So I took one for the team, visited in another browser I have never logged in from, turned off ad blocking, and clicked through on some ads.

The last time I tried Ads was about the same. Slow loads, Ads covering Posts, and other things.

Quite something else to see the end of their reviews. The article they wrote up quickly got passed around in my AT circles.

Anyone know if Anand commented on this at all? The article gave him a lot of (deserved) credit and I was glad to see that.

i never saw any word from anand

we were hoping he'd come back here and nef one last time, for nef's sake

Cool to see a bunch of other 10/9/99-ers in this thread. It'll be 25 years in a couple of weeks! And plenty of names i instantly recognized from days of yore. And thinking of some who are no longer with us like Russ, NCNE. After 25 years, I can't imagine not having a working bookmark to the latest incarnation of ATOT.

I kind of picture myself in years to come sitting in a retirement home telling tales...
"You know, guys, I was once an Elite Member at Anandtech Forums."
C'mon dude, we're not buying that story. You weren't even very technical!
"It's true! I was! Really!"
Anyway guys, it's time for lunch, let's walk over to the dining hall.
"No really!"
[whispering] Just ignore him.
