Alright I am looking at upgrading my current backup system (p2 300... old I know). I was thinking about an athlon Tbred 1700, 256 pc2100, and an asus a7n8x mobo. But I just ran into a guy here at school that has a Sony Vaio laptop model PCG-FX215. 800Mhz AMD Duron, 15" display, 128 Ram, 10gig HD, 32Meg ATI Rage, DVD. for $600. I would probably just use this as my main system ( I don't want something too nice or I won't be able to get anything done). Is this lappy a good deal? My doubts are with the duron- what would be a good price to get him to lower to? Any help would be great!

Student. Most of it's use will be spredsheets, data analysis using SPSS and of course web/email. Some graphical use with my digital cam and perhaps a CS game every once in awhile--game quality isn't important because the better it is, the more I'll play, thus wasting time. Besides if gaming was important I'd just build another desktop. Also, does anyone know if this lappy has some sort of docking station (so I could access my HDDs)?

The ting about lappys, is that they are weird. They are buggy and messed up. Both of my parents have them, and they are nice machines. IBM 1.8GHz, 512mb Ram, some ATI card, built in wireless... the whole deal. And they do odd thigns, like the sound will crap out. Or some other odd, no error message error. And both of their desktops run perfectly. So yeah, thats my spill on them. As for the deal, yeah I would take that. I would buy that laptop, if I was in the market for one.

Unless you are going to take the laptop on the road, I wouldn't waste the money on it.

You are buying a 800mhz system for $600.

You can get a new 2.4gig system from Dell for $400-$500.

I realize that buying desktop parts would obviously be cheaper and yeild a quicker machine. I guess I'm stuck with, is the deal so good that I might as well act on it, try to lower the price then get it, or just say the heck with it and build another rig. I guessed I'm more ambivalent than uninformed. Just wondering what you guys and gals thought. As an added note, yes I could make use of the portability, but that factor does not come into play enough that I would consider it conducive to my life at this point.

Edit: for spelling

Tell me where to move it and I will-- I'm not buying selling or trading anything on AT so it doesn't fit in the FS forum, and it certainly wouldn't fit into hot deals.
