I've been wanting to learn the basics about computers, how computers works, what you need to build one, the history of computers, etc. I'm not looking for computer science or computer engineering books, I'm an aerospace engineering student and with the little coding I've had to do I've realized that I probably wouldn't be good at coding in C, Java, etc.

Mike Myers has great books for preparing for CompTIA A+ exams. They go over the basics in-depth, should be a good place to start.

My site The PC Guide is currently quite old -- it was written in the late 90s and not updated because I moved on to other projects -- but it still covers the basics pretty well. Free, with ads, link in my sig.

If you want something more up to date, the "bible" is Mueller's book, Upgrading and Repairing PCs. The only downside of it is that over time he has cut more and more content out of the book and makes you refer to older editions on the accompanying disk. Also, some of the text doesn't get updated as other parts so it's a bit inconsistent. Still, nothing better out there right now.

Myers' book is a good overview for those who want less detail than Mueller.
