I'm looking for something to read for pleasure as opposed to dry history.

Thanks in advance.

One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (same era, good book)

For WWI:

I second the Band of Brothers recommendation. I've been meaning to read some more Ambrose books since I read it, haven't gotten there yet.

Anything by John Keegan on the subject is GREAT material. One of the best WWII writers / historians out there IMHO.

Outwitting the Gestapo by Lucie Abrac
- Pregnant French Resistor who takes part in many operations such as rescuing her
husband from a Vichy Prison

Night by Ellie Wiesel
- Family from Hungary I believe, sent to a concentration camp. Short and really good

Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut
- Half real / Half fake story about a guy who experienced the firing bombing of
Dresden, which was more devastating in terms of lives than the atomic bombs
dropped
