Good book about graphical design basics?

Anyone knows a good book about design basics? I know I can't learn creativity but a good book about design could help avoiding some design faux-pas.

The Design of Everyday Things is a very entertaining book. A bit outdated, but the examples are still useful.

A teacher(ergonomic class) of mine recommended that book.
