His interests include videogames and cartoons like DigiMon, but I want to get him something that would hopefully involve at least a small degree of creativity on his part, and maybe get him outside.

So far, I was thinking either a model rocketry starter set, or maybe one of those RC car kits that you have to build. Anyone else have any other suggestions?

Both those ideas sound good. Would his parents be able to help him with either project? Does he live in the suburbs (ie would he have access to a wide open area to shoot off the rocket?

Plenty of area around here to shoot off rockets, as we are in Alaska. He lives with only his mother. I figured I would help him with them, since I live just down the road.

I hope he might be interested in something like that. I always wanted to get something like that when I was his age, but we never got around to it.

I got my nephew a "dissecting microscope" made by Celestron. Well he's crazy over the thing. Forgotten about all the video/computer games and now it's the microscope. He's putting everything he can under it and got a little "bug box" made of clear plastic so he can contain live insects and put them under the scope. Suddenly he's aware of a microscopic world around him. And having lots of fun looking at it. So much better then vid.games.

An Intel microscope (QX3?). On sale occasionally. I picked one up for a friend for $36 shipped last week.

You just said his interests include video games and cartoons. What are you getting him a model rocket kit for? Get him a good strategy game. If he plays on the PC, burn him a disk with Warcraft 3 beta - he'll love it.

I got into model rocketry when I was younger, along with my astronomy craze (a small starter telescope is another option, but maybe a year or two off still). I loved it. I outgrew it about age 12, but then the knowledge of propulsion I'd gained with the rockets lended itself excellently to explosive devices.

Ahh... my model rocket days. :D

C 6-7 and bigger engines, ultra small rockets, composite materials, high velocity contact and time delay explosive payloads.... ahh... those were the days.

I had a massive H engine once. I made a ultra small lightweight rocket for it, all composite and mylar/carbon fiber/titanium. Just small enough to get a stable center of gravity. That SOB took off like a Saturn rocket engine on a hang glider and I never saw it again. :) Wayyy out of sight. Sumbitch is probably in orbit.

My best (female) friend has 2 little sisters, age 7 and 9, who also like digimon and videogames. I got em hooked onto Roborally (the non-PC version), GTA 2 and Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

Afraid it's not much outdoors stuff, but they do seem to like it a lot :)

Rockets are a great idea, boys (and men in general) love anything that explodes/catches fire/goes fast and rockets are a nice combination of these :)

Just watch out because it will cost lots if he gets addicted though.
One of my friends spends thousands on rocketry, his most recent one was around 7' tall with a J-class engine and a digital camcorder in it.

Rockets.

Fun to build and great to launch.

Just get him several kits to build, that use the same engine size, it makes it easier that way.

How about something sports related? You could get him a soccer ball and some cones really cheap or maybe a cheap archery set. Either would get him outside and not end up being very expensive if he found that he liked it.

Playboy subscription. It's time he learned.

Naah, when in doubt, go with a gift certificate.
