I'm trying to slim down a bit... I'm not really terribly overweight; but winter and working in IT has put on a couple lb's (or 20..) and I'd like to lose it. Over the past couple weeks I've eaten healthy.

There's a bike trail nearby (3.7mi) it's considered and "intermediate" trail. Is one lap per day (or every other day) sufficient? the course consists of pretty much constant up/down hills (not flat..) and takes me maybe 25 or 30 minutes...

i would double it. I run 2 miles, and biking would be easier (at least it seems like it to me)...double it, unless you are getting a heavy workout out of it.

if it takes ya 30 minutes to complete... ride it twice

You get a great workout riding road, too.. I'd say ride 5-10 miles each morning (commute to work, perhaps), and then save the MTB trails for a nice Saturday afternoon

This is a good starting point, but probably not enough to lead to real weight loss. Cycling is really not ideal for losing weight (unless you are really willing to put in the hours, which few are); running is far more effective.

That sounds like a good course to start with. If it feels too easy or like you didn't get a good workout then do 2 laps. I used to commute to work on a bike a couple times a month. 12 miles one way. That was a good workout.
