I'm working on my update to that big Tbird VS Duron article I did a little while back...

What kinds of benchmarks would you guys like to see?

MP3 encoding is FPU intensive isn't it? Do you think it will really show much of a difference just with a bit of cache change?

How would I benchmark this?

Where do I get this?
Performance Test 3

3dMark is out of the picture since my test box runs win2k and 3dmark crashes every single time I run a bench =( THat's because the program sux in win2k.

Sandra and Q3 are already completed =)

UT didn't show much of a difference between a Duron 700 and Tbird 1G! SO I don't know if I'm going to use it or not. I'll continue to play with and tweak it to see if I can get it tossed into the comparison.

if you really wana show the cache difference

do some VIDEO encoding

eg
M$ media encoder (encode WMV - no duh~)
RealProducer
VirtualDub (try encode DivX with this one - highly cpu intensive MPEG4 encoding, does about 40fps on my P3/818)

all these program WILL SHOW signifcant amount of speed increase on the Tbird as video encoding relies working with a large amount of memory, the Cache size really matters here

the best thing is to time each of these encoding and see which is faster and by how much, best if compare with intel P3/C2 as well

the usual
Q3, UT, 3dmark2000, CCWinstone2000, Sysmark2000 and the kind
try include more games
Kingdom is a good one to show the difference as far as i know

doing RC5 will show absolute NO difference between Tbird and Duron

i dont recommend sandra
even with the SAME cpu and mobo, just with different BIOS tweaks, you can have HUGe difference in sandra scores. Too bloated

might wana try software rendering Q2 crusher?~

Can you provide me with some links for the video encoding? I'm certainly interested... Also how would I time these? is there a timer right in the program?

I was thinking about Q2 =) where can I get the crusher demo?

for
M$ Media Encoder 7
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/en/default.asp
encode a MPEG (*.mpg) or a VCD (*.dat) [doesnt officially support *.dat but just copy the *.dat onto hard disk and rename to *.mpg, and it will work]

VirtualDub
http://www186.pair.com/vdub/index.html
this u can encode from *.mpg and *.dat straight into DivX
just read the readme and stuff seriously and u will find out how
make sure when u encode the Bitrate of the Video and the Bitrate of the MP3 (the audio portion) is the same everyone time u encode
i am not saying the Vid Bitrate must equal to the AudioBitrate but use the same one on every tests

DivX Codec
http://divx.ctw.cc
go there and get the codec to playback whatever u encoded from Virtual Dub (divX format)

RealProducer doesnt encode video files unless it is the Plus version

to time it there are many ways
stopwatch?
more 'scientific' would be running taskinfo (do u know what program this is? if not go to download.com and get it) it will show u the time which a program took your CPU
if not u can do the encoding on Win2k with the Taskmanager on
then just see the total time it took your cpu

for video encoding
MUSt encode from fast hdd (not from cdrom for sure)

btw i forgot where to get Q2 crusher

i like running benchmarks
but i dont like downloading unknown files
could u please tell me what that is?

The test rig uses a 7200 RPM Maxtor drive..

I'm on dialup so I'm downloading away =) Win2k is what I ALWAYS use...

actually i really would like to see more 'common tasks' being benchmarked

i have read the athlonOC DvsT article and it covers all the 'mainstream benchmarks' already

encoding Audio is also fun

gogo benchmark Mp3 compressor (has a benchmark routine) (optimised for SSE and 3dnow)
http://homepage1.nifty.com/herumi/gogo_e.html

zip file compression???
zip some files and time that??

another kind of stuff which i havent seen ANY website doing is mixing applications when testing and it should be intesting
what i am talking about is let say
listening to MP3+running winzip together
Mp3 + Q3 (low res)
Mp3 + some otehr benchmark
all these verses (compared to)
Purely running winzip
Purely Q3
Purely benchmarks

and we analyse the DEGRADE in performance when playing the Mp3(or playing vcd, etc) and see the impact of running programs along with other programs
the Tbird should have a LESS degrade in performance as compared to Duron due to the larger cache
use Sonique as the Mp3 player as it use more cpu than the winamp and has a better sound quality

just some suggestions

That is a damn good idea! playing mp3s and run something like business winstone to simulate every day application usage. BWS is already dominated quite a bit by the Tbird BTW...

The main purpose to my update will be to include 1Ghz processors ;) I also upgraded the test rig by putting in a geforce 2 MX and updated the drivers.

I like that performance test.. I haven't tried it on any different CPUs yet but It will certainly make the comparison =) I'm hoping to have it all together TONIGHT! I'm benchmarking like crazy... sitting here with the benchmark machine next to me... it's been running benches non stop for like the last 3 days.

Compare what you do, not synthetics.

I use
Quake3
3DMark
Audio Catalyst (MP3 Encoding)
(FlaskMPEG, VirtualDub) DVD Ripping/DivX Encoding

A sidenote that Real, ASF, and WMV are all awful formats, DivX is king.
