Good beer to get that's semi-exclusive to Maine/New Hampshire?

So I'll be in Maine for vacation coming up soon, right by the border of New Hampshire. First time going up there and I'm looking for any recommendations on beers that are relatively exclusive to the area. We have a big group going up there, so we have the budget to try pretty much anything and everything.

Also, does anybody know how the keg sales work in Maine/NH? Can I just go into any local distributor, fill out some forms, plunk down a deposit and be on my way?

Where are you coming from? Are you driving up? Lots of stuff up that way.

I would personally see what's happening at Portsmouth in NH. Their bottles don't travel much from the brewpub & the few that I've had have been delicious. Sister brewery Smuttynose does good stuff, but you can find them in most places in the northeast.

Allagash gets lots of national distribution, & probably won't be worth it just to buy bottles, but I would really enjoy a tour one day.

Kegs are property & you don't own them when you buy the beer. The deposit doesn't fully cover its loss either. People are scraping the metal from kegs everywhere & are a big reason deposits in many places have gone from just $10 to $80-$100 for some areas. Get some growlers filled instead. :)

I'm familiar with the process here in NY, I just wanted to make sure there wasn't anything special involved like having to go to a state run store or something like that.

Another vote for Smuttynose. It's not a tiny little brewery or anything, but it's pretty uniquely New England and pretty good to boot.

We get Geary's in NY, but I would stop in at Gritty's if I ever found myself in Portland. Lots of good beer in the vicinity. :)
