Venice beach is cool but if you actually want to walk on the beach goto either Zuma or Huntington.

1. Venice (lots to do, lot of people watching. Most "happening" beach in So.Cal)
2. Santa Monica (not THAT dirty just near the pier)
3. Redondo Beach (the strip south of the pier, parallel to Esplanade)
4. Malibu (Usually really crowded, but one of the nicest.. for a less populated area, pass Pepperdine and look for Windward beach)
5. Zuma
6. Newport beach (more touristy and not beachy but still a good time)
7. Hermosa / Manhattan beach (drive to Manhattan Village area, park, shop, and walk along the Strand to see the $5+ Million crazy houses)

I liked Ocean side, but that's because I liked walking around all of the shops. :p

if you want romantic, you HAVE to go to Santa Barbara .

It's about 80 mi north of LAX, but so worth the drive. I grew up there and it's the most incredibly beautiful place in the world. Look at the Arroyo Burro (and AB) pic folders on that site - that's my favorite beach. I went there almost daily as a kid...just walking/running on the beach w/my dog and family. <sigh - nostalgia setting in>

You said SD is kinda far, but if you do end up down in this neck of the woods, you could try:

1. The Silver Strand on Coronado. Really nice beach by Hotel Del Coronado.

2. Ocean Beach is pretty decent. Take a walk out on the pier as well.
