I'm not looking for anything amazing; my mom just wants to get a new camera. I figured I'd ask the AT geniuses if they had anything they recommended.

I'm looking in the $150-$250 range. Thanks in advance, as always.

Obviously, extra features would be groovy, but I don't want something that's going to overwhelm. Thanks!

unfortunately, in the effort to simplify picture taking, they managed to complicate the hell out of it.

you basically can't go wrong picking a canon SDxxx model. they're pretty much the benchmark.

I would have to agree. My sister was tired of her old Nikon and just wanted a camera that worked. Got her the SD800IS and she couldn't be happier with it. Its simple in that it only has three modes: take picture, take movie, review. Its well rated on DPReview and the SD series is very popular.

I use the SD1000, fantastic, compact camera, good battery life, takes fantastic pictures - you can find it for around $150 if you look hard enough.

Another awesome camera line is the Fuji F30/F31/F40 line of cameras. Closer to $200, but you WILL NOT find a better camera for low-light situations (indoors, bars, etc, etc). It has the best sensor on the market right now for low-light.

I got my mom a nikon S51. I like it because it's got a wheel on the back that makes navigation really easy.

For the most part though, camera's are fairly standard across the board. Many people may disagree and say there are important features that some point and shoots have that others don't, but for the average consumer, any model you pick will produce the same quality of photograph.
