I've been looking into getting a new notebook recently, but I tried Ubuntu a few months ago and it completely pwns XP. Thus, I want it on my new notebook (whatever it may be). Seeing as how Ubuntu has had major incompatability with most the hardware I've been looking at, I decided to go with a bare-bones system and build the thing. However, I'm a complete noob at bare bones notebooks, and I can find them anywhere (Dell/IBM/ASUS/Sony etc) websites. Any good sources?

Let me tell you about my Linux experience with my IBM R50e that I have specs for in my sig, if you want Linux running with minor effort get a Thinkpad, they are the most Linux supported laptops period, I got all the bells and whistles running on it even the on screen display ( OSD) when you use the Fn functions or if you use the Thinklight (keyboard light). I have never seen WiFi running on Linux before, well when I got my Thinkpad I DID !!! it took me 5 minutes to get WiFi up and running, I am using Fedora Core 4 which is my favorite distro, but in case of Ubuntu expect things to be much easier you have a lot of repostries available for you i.e Universe & Multverse...etc
Also let me warn you, if you want to get a Laptop and run Linux on and you want the WiFi to work then get it with the Intel 2200BG or 2100 mini-pci card, why ? Well it's because they are one of the rare wireless NIC manafacturers that have driver support for Linux.
Let me show you an example of one of the hundreds of websites that support Linux on Thinkpads : ThinkWiKi
I hope I have been helpful enough PM me if you have any Thinkpad, Linux related questions :D

I was actually seriously considering a thinkpad, and then Lenovo bought it. Right now I'm watching and waiting to see how their service and what-not will turn out (outsourcing++). Thanks though. Post + Link has got me looking at a T series, again. %-)
