good/bad USB 2.0 or Firewire PCI cards?

Hi,

I'm about to receive a free iPod (for having enough Tivo referrals) and my ancient Asus A7V based Athlon 1 ghz machine (don't laugh) doesn't have Firewire or USB 2.0 ports, so I'm in the market for a card.

I don't really need a combo (USB and Firewire) card, but if it isn't much more $, I might spring for it. What cards and chipsets are good/bad for USB 2.0 or Firewire or combos? It also must be relatively cheap.

well, i dont know what caused it, but i had a adaptec firewire pci card and after successful install, dead mobo, + corrupted the hard drive, + dead gpu fan on the next boot.

why not just buy a new mobo and CPU? all of them have usb2 and firewire on board now. it would only be like $175-$200 for a value setup and it would be tons better than an A7V.

by the way, the USB2 for ipod requires a special adapter that you have to buy and costs extra, so you would be looking for a firewire PCI card-- just make sure you buy it online where it's cheap, it will be like $50 in a store probably since they always overcharge for any kind of hardware like that.

I know, but I really don't have the time or inclination to do the research and throw together a new machine right now (and reinstall my OS, re-setup apps, etc.) just to use my iPod. I'm going to get a new PC in the next 8-12 months for sure and will also be getting a Mac in next 3 months. (Don't shoot me, I've been using PCs since 1983 and am now working on Mac sw for a living, yet I don't have a Mac at home.)

You sure you I need an adapter? I have no idea what exact model Tivo has sent me yet since it's still in transit other than it's a 20 gig non-Photo model. http://www.apple.com/ipod/specs.html says that the M9282LL/A (20GB) includes a Firewire and USB 2.0 cable.

Adaptec is very good but usually higher priced too. Let me check around and get back to you. If $$$ were no object, I would get Adaptec, but there are other cards would would do the job just fine for less I am sure.

Ok, this looks pretty decent for a Low price and has 3 USB 2.0 and 2 1394 Firewire ports. I have heard of them before and good things.

If you want to pay a lot more this looks good. Have had great luck with Dlink USB Hubs and cards.

I would bet the first one would give you what you need. There are some adaptec's listed at New Egg but nothing with Firewire. Firewire on the IPod here on all my systems, both Mac and PC seems smoother.
