Good b/w multifunction printer for small office? ~500

I'm looking for a network printer than can handle a few thousand pages per month and copies quickly. Color not necessary. What do you suggest for a reliable workhorse? Budget is around $500.

We'll also be doing a lot of batch scanning to PDF.

A Brother or Canon with a suitable document feeder, and 5k+ yield cartridges. Like say, a DCP-8150DN, or MFC-8710DW.

That'll do all but quick copying. AFAIk nothing in such a low budget can come close to copying like an expensive standing MFC.
