Throw out some suggestions! I've got a lot of driving to do in the upcoming weekend and I'm looking for some good texts to go along with me.

I tend to like mysteries, sci fi, high fantasy, classic lit, intrigue, heartwarming junk and oddball humor. Not a big fan of horror or gore.

Some existing favorite authors:
C.S. Lewis
Dick Francis
Douglas Adams
Emily Bronte
Irving Stone
Jack McDevitt
JRR Tolkien
Khaled Hosseini
Leo Tolstoy
Rita Mae Brown
Robert Jordan

I would try Wizzards First Rule by Terry Goodkind, thats the first book in the Sword of Truth series.

Would it be manageable as an audio book? I've been interested in checking it out but sometimes texts that are rich in background description (like Jordan) can be unwieldy by audio alone.

If you haven't read it, Dick Francis has a new book out. Dead Heat. My husband and I both thought it was very good.

Hmm, I never thought of listening to a book on a long trip.

It's the only way to travel IMO.

This is completely ignoring the OPs statement about not liking horror or gore, but I thought the audiobook of Stephen King's Cell was pretty good.

If you can find some Heinlein audiobooks (assuming you haven't read them) I would say go with one of them. My personal favorite is Stranger in a Strange Land.

I've been meaning to pick up Starship Troopers, actually, thanks for the reminder. I'm not too much of a Heinlein fan usually for some odd reason (have read Job: A Comedy of Errors, Stranger in a Strange Land, The Moon is a Strange Mistress), but I've heard that one is really good.

I did this on a recent 5hr trip I had to make. Listened to "The Bourne Identity" which I really enjoyed! Made the trip much more enjoyable and feel faster.

The first audiobook I ever listened to was Robert Ludlum's The Tristan Betrayal. You can't go wrong with spy thrillers
