Good application for video capture

I plan on recording a certain *ahem*, event on Television coming in early February
Anyway, I was wondering what is a good application to use for video capture. I've tried Windows Movie maker, which doesn't really dissatisfy me other than the fact that it will not encode in a raw uncompressed format. The Application that came wiht my Video card will capture in raw format, but not in the resolution that I want. 😕 I was just wondering what program that is free/decently priced program. I'm not looking to spend an astonomical ammount of money on Vegas Studio or Adobe Premier Pro.

My video card is in my Sig.

As long as you're not stealing cable or planning on distributing/selling your recordings, it's legal to record programs and movies off of TV. Just FYI.

You might try BeyondTV or SageTV, both of which are built specifically for TV recording/PVR. BTV will only record in WMV9 or MPEG2; SageTV I'm not entirely sure about. I also tried ShowShifter, which isn't as slick for PVR but had by far the best recording/encoding options. None are free (they're all ~$50), but all have free trials (which would suffice for taping one or two shows).
