these are all micro-ATX. but none of them really stands out from the crowd.

Category 1 - AM2+/ AM2

Category 2 - AM2+/ AM3

Category 3 - AM3/AM2+/AM2

also i'm a little confused by the multiplicity of AM* options.

i just want a board that will work with either of these CPU's ~

AMD Athlon II X4 quad-core 620
am3

AMD Athlon II X2 dual-core 240
Socket AM3

so does that mean i have to stick with the AM2+/ AM3 boards and the AM3/AM2+/AM2 boards ?

this one sort of stands out

As those are both AM3 socket processors, you'll then need an AM2+ motherboard if you intend to run that CPU along with DDR2 RAM....so all of those boards should work.. if you intend to run DDR2 with one of those 2 processors....

Asrock 780GMH is an excellent board. Not sure whether they have updated 785G version with DDR2 but if they do that might be a good choice. Unless you're shooting for an overclock record with a quad-core, the board is really outstanding.

I use the biostar 6150 board in category 3 for $43.99 shipped. I've had no problems with it, but have not tried overclocking.

I am partial also to the mATX gigabytes, but I think you need to answer what features you need and how much you want to spend. If you don't need firewire, the 6 SATA ports or the HDMI, a cheaper board might work fine. Heck, even the ECS GeForce6100OPM-M2 will work great, very fast and stable :)

I have used Gigabyte, ECS and Biostar and pleased with all of them. The gigabytes are in general more polished, but all of them have worked fine for me :)
