Good alternatives to NET VAMPIRE download manager?

I've been using Net Vampire lately and it's been pissing me off. Time for a change. But to what? All the mainstream/large download managers have sucked and had adware/spyware, crashed, etc. But the prob with Net Vampire is that it often "catches" things that aren't there. For example it'll catch GIFs or something and the page won't be loading in IE, I won't know why... then I realize Net Vampire has opened up, and is asking me if I want to download this file which I never CLICKED on, but just it just came up because I went to that site. I mean wtf?
