Good air filters

Well, since I have gotten home, my allergies are killing me. This is due to the fact that my family has two cats, and I am very allergic to them. My door is usually closed, and the cats are never in my room, but my allergies are still killing me.

Can anyone recommend me a good air filter? I had a HEPA filter but it did nothing for me, but it could have just been that model.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just watch tv for about five minutes. You will see about seventeen good options.

I'd rather have someone who has used one give an opinion. I don't need something shoved down my throat by the TV, and the main one (Ionic Breeze), according to everyone I know who has it, sucks.

go to library. look up consumer reports. or pay to see online. hepa filters are great. stuff from sharper image is beyond worthless. u are an engineer, i'm sure ull appreciate the testing cs uses.

There's a good one. I bought a Honeywell Hepa from them a year ago and it is great. The room always smells fresh, it isn't too loud, and I can actually breathe through my nose now.

The Ionic Breeze and all the other sh!t like that is seriously sh!t. Just look at Consumer Reviews' opinions about the Sharper Image Ionic Breeze. They don't even move air.. so they can't possibly filter as much. Hepa is the way to go... it's what hospitals use.

How about getting rid of the cats? Whatever family member that inisists on torturing you needs a reality check.

I am already getting shots for my allergies. Can't do much more than that until they release a vaccine.

WTF? Get out of my thread you fool.

Box fan + 20x20" air filter = good cheap air filter.

Seal the filter to the back of the box fan and you're set. I think I read about it here.

Probably me. I have been doing that for years.

Just give the cats away. You don't know where they went.

Yeah, I would be killed in my sleep. I love the cats, but I leave my door closed 24/7 because of them, and any of my friends that come over that have allergies suddenly fall victim to the cats.

Believe me, I have tried to get her to get rid of them, but as I said, she is a stubborn bitch and won't get rid of them, even if it will eliminate my most sever indoor allergy.

My only solution is to leave my door shut, and get an air filter/purifier.

Yeah after I read it I found a box fan, air filter, and duct tape immediately. After a week I had to take it outside and shake a LOT of dust off!

It shouldn't be too hard to mount some kind of a rail to allow you to easily remove & replace the filter by sliding it off the back. I definitely have to check into this, I just picked up a cheap box fan at Home Depot the other day.

Definitely a "best idea of the year" candidate.😀

Consumers Reports just did a test on air cleaners and dissed this big time.

Here is their top 5 (cost/filter):

Friedrich C-90A $500/$72
Kenmore 83202 83200, Whirlpool AP51030HO $350/$220
Whirlpool AP45030HO $270/$130
Bionaire BAP-1300 Holmes HAP675RC $225/$132
Honeywell Enviracare 50250 $180/$156

It's a good idea, but do they make HEPA filters that will fit on a Box fan? A normal carbon filter, or something similar, won't remove the allergens that affect me.

I haven't bought any air filters in a while, but I remember the last time I looked they have ones that filter allergens. They were more expensive, however.

I picked up a Hamiton Beech filter for 100$ at Amazon. Has a UV light, carbon prefilter, hepa filter, air quality sensor and automatic fan speed control about a month ago. Seems to be working good for me.

Yep. 20 x 20 is a very popular size. They are about $20 instead of about 50 cents for a regular one.
