Hi guys,

Im still in AGP mode for now. I want to use til next summer. So in mean time, I want to upgrade my 9600XT w128 to something else. Anyone can recommend me one? I'm eyeing on PNY 6600gt. What you guys think?

 
What kinda price you looking at?

The best options in agp right now are as follows, slowest to fastest:

$150 - 6600gt
$180 - 6800nu
$225 - X800gto
$270 - X850pro
$285 - X800xl

The 6800gs should be available in agp soon as well, probably around $250-$275 imo, and will perform on par with the x800xl

EDIT: you say you'll be moving to PCIe next summer so i'd say the 6600gt will do just fine.
 
Is NVidia going to make an AGP 6800GS? I've heard nothing on this... I thought NVidia and ATI already basically gave up releasing new AGP chipsets.

If anyone has a source on an AGP 6800GS, I'd be interested to read/see it. I thought new AGP chipsets were no longer going to happen?!?!
 
Someone here has already seen one! As in built and in their hands is the way I took the post-can't remember who that was though. It seems they are coming out soon!
 
6800gs in agp is confirmed, yes.

hmm? There's no difference between pcie and agp performance wise, so a 6800nu pcie is the equivalent, if they make it in that flavour.
 
Damn, if I knew they were making a 6800GS in AGP, I would have waited... I just recently purchased a 6800GT thinking it was as good as my AGP system was ever going to get (I sure wasn't going to pony-up for a 6800U). Oh well, so I paid a little more, but at least I do have a 6800GT.

I'm too damn-cheap to build a new PCI-E system.

Cheap has nothing to do with it. It's just not smart to upgrade cpu/mb AND gpu if your cpu/mb are meeting performance needs. How much did you pay for the 6800gt?
 
I'd like to add a question to this thread:

x800gto vs 6800nu?

The comparison, specs wise, would seem to indicate that the x800gto should easily outperform the 6800nu with 1 more vertex shader, faster clocks and more memory. However, I'm unable to confirm this in a real world benchmark. Has anyone found a website which has released benchmarks detailing both these cards?

I'm trying to decide if the gto is worth $45 extra

Ummm... let's just say a little over $300 for a BFG 6800GT OC. Believe it or not, it's getting hard to even find anyone still selling 6800GTs for the AGP format. I did quite a bit of searching, most of my regular stops for computer shopping (like NewEgg) don't even carry 6800GTs for AGP anymore.

I know the price to performance isn't all that hot, but I wanted as much horsepower as I could get for my AGP system because I really don't intend on upgrading this system for as long as possible. For most people a 6600GT is an excellent price to performance bargain. To be honest, I already had a 6600GT in my main system, but my wife needed her system upgraded and I wanted to bump-up my system as much as possible without going PCI-E (MB/CPU/Memory & GPU would all add up quite a bit). Believe it or not, I did notice a good jump in performance from the 6600GT to the 6800GT... more then I expected, and of course the 6600GT isn't wasted at all, as it went in my wife's system so we're both happy having GeForce 6's in our systems... the last upgrade for either of us for awhile (she has a 2.4GHz P4, and I have a 3.0GHz P4).

For the original poster, I would recomend (price to performance) a GeForce 6600GT, or hold-out for the GeForce 6800GS... it should be nearly $100 cheaper then my 6800GT and nearly as fast. Both should be good values... only shell-out for a 6800GT if you're crazy like me (and can even find one).
 
Well, right now, the best thing to do is wait for the 6800GS AGP. Otherwise, the x850XTPE for 330 is good.

I'm in exactly the same situation Wolfshanze. My wife is running an old ECS k7s5a motherboard w/ 1700+ stock cpu and a 9700 non pro. I want to get her a decent (50-100% faster) gpu upgrade to get her system well into '07. My rig fairs slightly better with an nforce2 mb, 3000+ and a 9800 non pro. Same kinda gpu upgrade for me and we'll both be set for a good while.

Both these cards are awesome. Hers is 2 1/2 years old now, mine slightly younger. Only just starting to see poor-ish performance 😀

I'm a little concerned about her slow cpu. It's the fastest, afaik, that the ecs mb can take but I wonder if it's fast enough to reasonably support an x800/6800 level gpu.
