Good, affordable CPU during July?

Hello all! Before I ask my question, I should introduce myself since this is my first time on these forums. I am no expert on building my own computers (I've only done it once, and that was the last time I got a computer), but I do know a thing or two. I do not overclock and my budget is not terrifyingly large. The reason I chose to build my own computer was that I was satisfied last time I did it. I got a decent $700 system with everything I needed (processor I got was under $100). Now my system is old and is starting to act sluggish occasionally. I have 256mb of RAM, which is starting to hurt me during some memory intensive games such as Microsoft Flight Simulator. My processor also bites during large games because it is an AMD 1600 at around 1533 megahertz (the numbers may be a little off, but it is around that). The thing that saves me with many of my games is my graphics card, which I think is pretty decent (Radeon 9600). I also have a nice flat 17-inch monitor. My system may seem like crap to gurus like you all, but for $700 two years ago, it was pretty good (however I got the graphics card one year ago).

I am looking to buy a new computer in July and I was wondering what parts I should expect to want by then (I need processor, motherboard, ram, and hard drive, I have everything else). I need at least 1 gigabyte of RAM and at least a 160 gb hard drive. I looked at the new middle-range guide for pointers (3200+ wincester core looked good), but I am not up to date on new processors coming out and possible price fluctuations. I am looking for a processor that is AMD, 64 bit, and 939 socket (I know this limits my selection by quite a bit). My budget is around $600, but do not stick to that religiously. I am flexible and can extend it a bit.

Any pointers would be appreciated! I do not want anybody spending a lot of time just answering this question, and I am just looking for some quick pointers (basically I want to know how much I need to spend and what processor is good). I also do not know how feasible it is to predict the market situation into July, so if that is impossible than I apologize for any inconvenience.

Welcome to the forums.

Its very hard, if not impossible, to guess what will be available to buy in July. Most likely the X2's will be available in high quantities by then, but AMD might release some more, cheaper CPU's, they might not. Just wait until a few weeks before your going to buy to start making yoru decisions; the market changes so fast that its hard to do it before then.

Welcome.

I'm going to wait until July to buy my upgrades also. Here is what I'm going with:

AMD Athlon 64 (939) 3200+ 512KB Venice Core $199
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum motherboard $135
Corsair Value Select 2x512MB PC3200 DDR 400 $90
SEAGATE 160GB 7200 ATA $50AR - I bought the hd already, couldn't pass up the rebate.

Don't know what you really want to build, edit (should have read more of your post) but Comp-USA has a Semperon 3000+ and BIOSTAR mobo combo for $119, 3000+ A64 and I think, MSI mobo combo for about $70-80 more. WD 160gig 8 meg cache hd's at $29 after rebate !!!! . The also have the UBER ASUS SLI mobo alone for $249, greeeeeat mobo if SLI's yoour thing. All seems good... WALMART has/HAD a complete Semperon 3000+ system, monitor kB, mouse speakers, monitor etc for $550, no rebate this past week end. Ya just can't build em that cheap.

EDIT:

I would go with Jakebrake's setup, except for the fact that his motherboard choice is PCI-Express, while your graphics card is an AGP 8x. However, since that setup comes to about $470, I think it would be worth your while to upgrade your graphics card to a 6600GT (which can be had for about $165). Overall that would come above your budget at $634...but it would be worth it. If you wanted to stick with your current card though, get the MSI Neo-2 Platinum instead of the Neo-4

Thanks for the tips everyone!

I was hoping to maybe buy something ahead of time, but I think I'll wait. If the 3700+ San Diego comes down low enough in price I will get that. Otherwise I'll stick with the 3200+ Winchester.

As to ryanv12's comment, I will probably hold off on a new graphics card till after the Christmas holidays. I upgrade my system periodically, so I would rather get a better processor and motherboard (which aren't really "replaceable" like other items) now, and upgrade a better graphics card later. Thanks for the motherboard suggestion though.

Venice added SSE3 support and the ability to run 4 sticks of ram @ DDR 400 instead of 333..

Performance is just about identical, but the overclocking potential is typically better on a Venice core..

I see. What advantages does SSE3 offer?

Some media applications can see some improvements, but overall not needed.. if you don't know what it is, you don't need it :p

Should give you some help between Winchester and Venice..
