So apparently, my new mobo, the Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, requires a 24-pin PSU. The cheapest one i can find is the Vantec 520W for $99, with the Antec 550W for $115 or so. Is there anything cheaper than that, or will one of those 20 -> 24-pin adaptors do the trick? I realize it's less than ideal, but for like half the price, it might be worth it. Any info would be much appreciated.

Go with quality: Seasonic and Enermax 24 pin PSUs can be had for $100 give or take a few bucks.

Seasonic Super Silencer 460W - $100 at Newegg
Enermax Noisetaker 470W-485W - $110-125

These two PSUs will outdo a Vantec or Antec running at 550W+.

Don't skimp on the PSU! Go with the Vantec. I have the one you listed and have had zero problems.

Cheap and PSU are not allowed in the same sentence anymore (well this is the last sentence)!!!!!

Check the specifications.. The antec 550EPS has 36A on the +12V rail.. While the new OCZ Modstream 520w has only 26A on the +12V rail. big diff.

I'd get the Antec 550EPS, you get more Amps for your money..

Check Directron--here's a link to that category.

They have one for less than $50...of course, it looks sorta crappy.

One PSU that gets no discussion around here that is a quiet, high quality PSU with all the latest specs is this coolermaster at Newegg:

Cooler Master RS-450-ACLY

ActivePFC, ATX12V V2.0, Dual 12V rails, 120MM single fan, 2 SATA

The 12V rails listed are for continuity, which most mfgs dont report. Peak ratings are +12V1=18A, +12V2=16A.

Take a look at the review links newegg has listed as resources; hard to find a PSU that is more up to date and quiet for $78.
