I want to upgrade my PC speakers mostly for listening to mp3's. I'm trying to avoid a subwoofer since I really don't have the space for one. Does anyone know a good 2 piece shielded, powered speaker system I could try? I want some decent tight bass and accuracy. I don't need a lot of volume. I was checking out the Bose MediaMate and Yamaha YST-M100. They both got pretty good reviews but I haven't been able to hear them play. If you have tried these speakers or know of something better please let me know. Thanks

you might want to check out the sirocco spirits. they're expensive, but they seem to be very good. or, if you're listening to mostly music w/ little room, you might want to spend the money for a good pair of headphones. looks like a few sennheiser hd-580s are still floating around around. that's probably your best bet for your money. a step down from the hd-600s, generally considered the best audio quality you can get before stepping up into $10k/electrostatic range.

Tight base is like tightening a drum
the power amplifire wattage determines at what volume the base is full sounding
so if u get 6 to 8 inch dual concentric speakers made with polypropolin cone substance and use a minimum of 100 wat rms / channel or more u will get fine base at low voulumes. alternately u can just get an optimus cube speaker (4inch cubed( and not amplify at all and listen at the music card's full output.
depends on space and on money u wish to spend/.

I just checked out the link for the Scirocco Spirits, and the way they are described is exactly what I was looking for. It is more than I wanted to spend but I'm going to watch for a deal. Thanks for the tip.
