my Cambridge Microworks have served me well for a long time. For a 2.1 setup I would geta new pair of the same if I needed another set.
The price is cheap now too, around 100 bucks, used to be like 250 when it came out

I would recommend the Klipsch 2.1 as well. I have had mine for abit over a year now and if I was buying another pair of computer speakers I would get them again. I am a pretty big stereo junkie and they are the best I have heard. Though I have not listend to any of the 4.1 or 5.1 speaker set ups for computers. They just don't interest me. I have a home theatre for that.

yeah i dont see the nee for 5.1 for computers. A few of my friends have them and yeah they're cool but i 1) dont have anywhere to set the other speakers and 2) dont think i need the other 2/3 for what im doing. Ill look into the speakers you guys said.

Thanks,
Tom

get the EV SonicXS 2.1 HardCore at CompUSA- on the website they are $180 and at Microcenter and other stores they are well over $120... BUT i went to compusa and in store they seem to be selling them for $49.99-- i picked up a pair and they are as good as all the reviews for them say they are-- over 240WATTS of power too!

EV SonicXS for $50 at CompUSA. Just buy them. You will NOT find a better set of speakers for under $150.

I researched the net and decided I would go out and buy the Promedia 2.1's. It was an easy sell since I am now on my second set of Klipsch home stereo spkrs, and I wasn't really concerned with the price. When I auditioned them, they were nothing short of awsome. Then I listened to the Altec VS4121's and they sounded as if they should cost twice the price of the Klipsch. I picked them up for less than $150(a steal). I have posted a pic below. They look almost as good as they sound!

Altec Lansing VS4121 (the Klipsch killers) flanking the NEC 18in LCD.

Goes to show that different folks hear different things. I had a chance to listen to both at my local Circuit City and I didn't think the Altec were in the same league as the Klipsch. The sats on the 4121's also felt a little cheap to me.

BTW, you can pick the VS4121's up for below $100 from most vendors.

I went with the Klipsch which I felt were very much worth the cost. I suggest running out and taking a listen if at all possible so you can pick the speaker that sounds best to you.

I'd also recommend the EV SonicXS if you can still get them for the $50. They're not the best looking speakers I've ever seen, but they really do have a very impressive sound. And for $50 you simply can't even come close to competing with them.

The Monsoon PlanarMedia's also sound very very nice.

Where do you guys live? The CUSAs I called said this is for online only, nothing in-stock in-store.

Altec Lansing ATP3. Runs about $80. My favorite, even bought a set for my grandma.

I also recommend the Klipsch Promedia 2.1s. They have a nice bass and a pretty decent midrange. They are also a tad pricey, but for listening to music they are better than a lot of other speakers on the market. I bought these to replace my Cambridge Soundworks 1800FPSs. Those speakers were decent, but lacked the hi-fidelity audio playback that I was looking for.

Unfortunately, 2.1 setups are not the best for providing good positional audio. My Cambrige 4.1 setup certainly did a better job of creating a "sound space" when I had the speakers placed properly. So, I supplemented my purchase with some nice headphones. This way, if I really need positional audio then I can just strap those on. I bought Sony MDR-V700s. Although I am certainly pleased with them, I recommend some Seinhausser (Spelling) headphones in a similar price range if you can find them. My friend got some; I can't remember which model in particular, but he paid about the same as me, $100, and his headphones definitely sound better for listening to music. Gaming is pretty similar though.
