Good 16-24 port switch for HOME use? How much?

I'm planning things out in my head and on paper, for my home network. 16-24 ports scattered about the house. I plan on putting up to 4 ports in certain rooms, this way if I change the layout of the room, I don't have to run a 50-foot cable from the PC to the wall. 🙂

I've been looking at the Dell PowerConnect 2000 series. They seem pretty good for the money. They have their 24-port, Model 2024 for $124 (after you remove the 3-year service plan). What do you guys think? 2024

Here is a couple of dlinks at newegg, I use 5 24 port dss-24+ at work and they are just fine:

If u dont need rack mopunt, go for the $99 + 5 shipping one. It is PERFECT for what u need and fairly cheap for a 24 port 10/100 auto MDI/MDIX

I'm actually going to rackmount it..right under the patch panel. Might as well do it right. I'm sure they sell small racks, right? Like maybe a dozen 1U spaces?

You know what? The cheaper one (DES1024D) is also rack mountable. It also does auto MDI/MDIX...What is the diff b/t the two? I'm 😕

i go only netgear... hub, 8 port switch, 16 port switch... all solid blue netgear.. costs a few bucks more but solid like a mofo

I wouldnt go so far as to say netgear is any better then dlink, etc in SOHO based switches.

I am running 5 of the dlink 24 port rackmounts for over a year with never so much as a hicup. I also run an 8 port gigafast at home with no problems either.
When dealing with unmanaged switches, any of the name brand SOHO's are about equal.

Thanks bud. I'm going to get the D-Link DSS24+. Nice piece for the price. 🙂

For a small business, would it be better to have 2 16-port switch instead of 1 24-port?
just in case the 1 switch fails, whole network does not go down?

Neosolo,

Actually it is better two have one switch performance wise. Two switches attached at 100 or even 200 Mbs is still a bottle neck at that connection.

Same when dealing with 30 or 300 ports, try to keep them in the same switch.

For a business, keep a spare on hand.

I have an extra 24 port just in case. As cheap as they are now, it is small price to pay for a business (even a small one).

Damn, between this, and some ram advice, you owe me a hardware reco on something somewhere down the line 🙂

Enjoy my friend, this is a nice switch for under $125 delivered. I paid about $225 for them a year ago and that was cheap for them then.
