Right now I'm limited to those 2 for playing DVD's. Howeve rI can get whatever video connector is needed for max quality (I'm assuming Compnent cables) does eitehr of them do 480p?

Not sure about 480p. I have recent versions of both systems (made this year) and I think the PS2's DVD playback looks noticeably better than the XBox (on a non-HDTV with component connections)

Well some quick research shows that the XBOX does 480i for DVD playback

The PS2 says progressive scan output which I take to mean 480p..but only on the recent version. I have the first gen PS2 so I'm not sure what mine is capable of

Here's a quick breakdown.
Xbox has a more feature-packed DVD player (Multi-speed FF and REW, zoom) *Later model PS2s may have this, dunno
No Xbox can play DVDs at 480p (Without a modchip and XBMP)
Only the latest model PS2 can play DVDs at 480p.

It's purely a software limitation. Maybe Microsoft didn't buy the rights to a deinterlacing DVD playback filter for the Xbox?
