FW works as I have demonstrated but I wouldn't actually recommend it.

It's more of a solution for someone like me who already has an old iMac needing an upgrade. If you don't have an iMac yet then just buy a newer model. Minimum I would recommend is an iMac with Thunderbolt and USB 3.

Finding the right adapter might be tricky, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204592 but that'd be a neat way of keeping the computer useful.

I think you want to a purchase an SSD. Firewire 800 is just quicker than a normal hard drive, considering you approach the theoretical highest speeds.
