gonna try linux finally...which one?

ive finally decided to mess around with linux. hmmm anyone have any recommendations on which type of linux i should try?
 
If you have a Primary Slave HDD that can be reserved for Linux, SuSE 7.0 is very nearly an automatic installation process. While lots of folks love Mandrake, versions 5.3, 6.0 and 7.1 have all exhibited quirks that don't belong in a Linux distribution--at least for me. Gallic flair is justly renowned. However, Germanic thoroughness and attention to detail win out when writing an OS. For me, SuSE can't be beat.

Many folks think buying or DLing an ISO image to be burned to a CD-R is all that's necessary. Badda bing--you're a Linux user. It's much smarter to first find out if your hardware is supported by a distro you're interested in. Then I suggest buying "Linux for Complete Idiots." Then DL or buy the distribution you've investigated. You'll learn a lot before even trying to install the OS. This is a Good Thing, TM, Marca Registrada.
 
woohoo another vote for suse. i use 6.3 and love it, im sure the higher the better, but i have heard lots of great things about mandrake 7.x so you cant go wrong.

lagvoid, I'd try Mandrake 7.2. It's by far the easiest to set up and "mess around" with; and though I've been a SuSE user since the 4.x series was released, package maintenance (installation/upgrading/removal) seems to be geared primarily toward Red Hat-based distributions, so you won't have to worry about having things installed in "strange" places.

Both SuSE and Mandrake are RPM-based, but for ease-of-use and for a gentle introduction, Mandrake 7.2 really can't be beat. If you're a bit more "on the edge," however, and willing to tinker more, SuSE 7.0 is a great candidate as well. I'd hold off on 7.0, though, since 7.1 is due "anytime"...

Definitely don't get vanilla Red Hat 7.0; quite a few things are broken, and since I'm a developer, I can't stand broken development tools. =P
 
Hey! Slackware is not a pain in the arse! It is wonderful! Everyone should start with it...it would drastically reduce the amount of "expert linux users" that don't even know how to install a program without rpm..... Plus slackware has install options that make a lot more sense when it comes to what exsists in what packages.
